Griper Blade: Is it Just Me or are They Rolling Out the War on Christmas Earlier Every Year?

I took a few days off from the blog for Thanksgiving and now I'm back. I figure that we 'secular progressives' should probably wait until after turkey day to roll out our war on Christmas. It's like we get started earlier every year.

We secular Grinches have been served up a loss by that hero of the holidays, Bill O'Reilly. Wal-Mart will switch from saying 'Happy Holidays' to 'Merry Christmas.' Who knew Bing Crosby was trying to kill Christmas by singing 'Happy Holidays?'

Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly and a few conservative Christian groups have argued that there is a ‘‘war on Christmas.’’ They’ve even claimed that by dropping the words ‘‘Merry Christmas,’’ retailers — perhaps unwittingly — joined a liberal conspiracy to remove religion from popular culture so that the gay agenda and legalized abortion can thrive.

What’s thriving, though, is Wal-Mart, which put an executive on O’Reilly’s show to promote its change of heart in a free, prime-time commercial.


What gets me is that all of these champions of Xmas are the same people who promote the philosophy of Scrooge. It's the people who are contemptuous of the poor (the vast majority of whom are children), the people who hate gays and women and anyone who's not a solid baptist, the people who call for the assassination of foreign leaders, as Pat Robertson did, or will call for terrorist strikes on San Francisco, as O'Reilly has...
