Libby Claims to be Fall Guy for Rove

It's like a scene from a 1930s film noir -- Edward G. Robinson as I. Lewis Libby. "I was set up, a fall guy, see? And I fell, brother, I fell hard. Well, Scooter Libby's not going to be anybody's patsy, see? Scooter's no chump!"

Reuters:

The former vice presidential aide charged with perjury was "set up" by the White House to protect political strategist Karl Rove during a CIA leak investigation, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

Lewis "Scooter" Libby was so worried that he would be blamed for blowing the cover of a CIA operative that he asked his boss, Vice President Dick Cheney, to intervene on his behalf, defense lawyer Theodore Wells told the jury at the beginning of Libby's perjury trial.

"He was concerned about being set up," Wells said. "He was concerned about being the scapegoat for this entire Valerie Wilson controversy."

It's kind of hard to know who to root for here. Do I want Libby to get off, on the off chance that the spotlight moves to Cheney or Rove? Or do I settle for what's most likely and root for the prosecution. It's a real quandary.

One thing I do know is that Dick can really murder a metaphor. Check out this from the Reuters article:

But in his opening statement, [Libby defense lawyer Theodore] Wells made clear he also intends to point a finger at the White House and the CIA.

Wells displayed a note written by Cheney that said he was "not going to protect one staffer (and) sacrifice the guy that was asked to stick his neck in the meat grinder because of the incompetence of others."

This could open the floodgates for an avalanche of mixed metaphors.
