New MoveON.org Ad Targets McCain Over Surge

This isn't the best time to be AZ Sen. John McCain. First, he got dissed by evangelical leader James Dobson -- after months and months of kissing evangelical ass. Turns out, John McCain doesn't hate gays nearly enough to qualify as a good christian.

And Bush taking him up on the troop escalation doesn't help him any, either. Bush's wildly unpopular 'troop surge' idea is being pinned on McCain in a new MoveON.org ad:

Bush can get away with doing unpopular things because he doesn't have to care about popular opinion anymore -- being a lame duck has its advantages. John McCain, on the other hand, has a notion that he might be president next go round -- a possibility which seems to be growing more and more distant with each passing day.

It would be hard to pretend that this ad, which I've seen aired on CNN, isn't meant to throw a monketwrench into McCain's '08 campaign. In fact, MoveON.org's statement with the ad barely hides that purpose at all.

This new TV ad will serve three goals: it will get the word out about John McCain and Iraq, it will help strengthen opposition to escalation in Congress and it will spark a debate about Iraq among 2008 presidential candidates.

The debate being sparked would obviously be over why the hell McCain thought escalation was a good idea.
