The Hill:
Freshman Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will follow in his predecessor’s footsteps today, joining 10 colleagues to reintroduce the sweeping bill reining in the spread of global warming that was championed by former Vermont Sen. Jim Jeffords (I).
Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairwoman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) is a lead cosponsor of the measure, which would mandate a reduction of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions to their 1990 levels by the year 2020. The emissions cuts would be achieved through a complex system of benchmarks and milestones for businesses that burn carbon-based fuels.
I'm guessing that this has little chance of passing, but you never know. It'll serve to get people on record as to where they stand on the issue, anyway.
In a poll taken late last year, respondents were asked, "As you may know, scientists have found evidence that the earth's climate is warming. From what you have heard or read, do you think global warming is a very serious problem, a somewhat serious problem, not too much of a problem or not a problem at all, or haven't you heard enough about this to say?" 73% said it was a serious problem. In the same poll, 58% said the President Bush is doing too little to address the problem.
The people are behind it, anyway -- not that that makes much difference to Bush...
