Bush's Actions Contrary to His Photo Op Tour

Yesterday, I wrote about how President Bush's big Central and South American 'Love Me' tour wasn't going so well, what with the riots in the streets and all. It turns out that Bush, as he always has, is making a lot of empty promises about how much he cares about the bottom half of the western hemisphere.

During his trip to Latin America, one of President Bush's goals is to "challenge a widespread perception in Latin America of U.S. neglect," and he has been telling the region's chronic poor, "We care about your plight." (In his speech to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Bush used the phrase "social justice" five times.) "It's an attempt to try to show a softer, gentler Bush," Armand Peschard-Sverdrup of the Center for Strategic and International Studies said.

It turns out that Bush has proposed deep cuts in aid to S. America. Latin America Working Group (LAWG) shows us Brazil as an example. Bush has proposed cutting Child Survival and Health aid by 45% and eliminating development aid altogether.

The president is on a busman's holiday. Taking a break from lying to americans for a while, he's headed to nations farther south to lie to the people there.
