Gingrich, Exposed as a Hypocrite, Denies He's a Hypocrite

Is that a possible presidential campaign I hear crashing and burning?

Washington Post:

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich was having an extramarital affair even as he led the charge against President Bill Clinton over the Monica S. Lewinsky affair, he acknowledged in an interview with a conservative Christian group.

"The honest answer is 'Yes,' " Gingrich, a potential 2008 Republican presidential candidate, said in an interview with Focus on the Family founder James C. Dobson to be aired today, according to a transcript. "There are times that I have fallen short of my own standards. There's certainly times when I've fallen short of God's standards."

Gingrich asserted in the interview, however, that he should not be viewed as a hypocrite for pursuing Clinton's infidelity.

Yeah, this from the guy who served his wife divorce papers while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer. He's a real prince. If these are his standards, I'd hate to know about the times he's fallen short of them.

On the other hand, Gingrich isn't a political dope. This is exactly the sort of story you'd want to get out in front of if you're making a run. 'Confessing' to this on the pro-GOP Dobson program is a lot like Dick Cheney running straight to FOX to talk about shooting some poor guy in the face. There wouldn't be a lot of tough questioning.

If someone else were to find out about this before he admitted it, it'd be a scandal. As it is, he's reduced it to baggage.

I don't think Gingrich had much of a chance anyway though or that he's a particularly relevant anymore. But still, it's fun to see someone who spent his political career lying through his teeth get caught.
