Heckuva job, there, FEMA, yet again. [WFIE] Today’s disaster: Hawesville, in Western Kentucky. After Hurricane Katrina, FEMA announced all towns protected by earthen floodwalls must have them inspected and certified. If not, the areas will be designated as at-risk-of-flood, driving property values down and saddling homeowners in the area with giant flood-insurance bills. It costs $75,000 to have the floodwall inspected. Great, said Hawesville. We’ve got the cash all ready to go, let’s get to inspecting. Not so fast, said the Army Corps of Engineers. Thanks to a loophole in the law, all inspections *must* be paid for using federal grant money. Okay, said the town of Hawesville. Give us the grant money and we’ll get to inspecting. Ummm, said FEMA, here’s the thing. We’re all out of federal grant money for inspections. No federal grant, no inspections, and Hawesville is running out of time. |
