Obama Apologizes for Nancy Reagan Joke

clipped from afp.google.com

Barack Obama's first press conference as US president-elect came with an apology attached Friday, as he phoned former first lady Nancy Reagan seeking forgiveness over a "careless" crack about her conducting seances.

"President-elect Barack Obama called Nancy Reagan today to apologize for the careless and off-handed remark he made during today's press conference," Obama transition team spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter said in a statement a few hours after the briefing.

"The president-elect expressed his admiration and affection for Mrs. Reagan that so many Americans share, and they had a warm conversation," she said.

See? I told you so...

The joke in question:

I have spoken to all of them [former presidents] who are living -- I didn't want to get into a Nancy Reagan moment, doing any seances...
Not a big deal, if you ask me. But I called it, so I thought I'd follow up.
