Obama Orders Gitmo Closed

clipped from www.usatoday.com
President Obama on Thursday formally ordered a re-evaluation of how terrorist suspects are treated by U.S. law, including a decision to close the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, within a year.
President Obama signs an executive order closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay Thursday in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington.

Obama signed an executive order restricting the "enhanced interrogation techniques" put in place by the Bush administration, including a ban on waterboarding.

Another order called for re-evaluating the system of military trials established by President George W. Bush, who regarded the Guantanamo detainees as enemy combatants.

Obama said the closure of Guantanamo will be "consistent with national security and foreign interests of the United States."

He said retired military officers who visited the White House "made a passionate plea that we restore the standards of due process."
Some wonder how we're going to sort out the real bad guys from the innocents Bush swept up in an overzealous kidnapping for bounty scheme.

See, there's this new thing called "trials." That's what they're for.
