Proof GOP Leadership is Insane

clipped from www.mcclatchydc.com

Has the Republican Party, whose presidential candidate and dozens of congressional hopefuls were rejected by voters in November, already been reinvigorated by its opposition to President Barack Obama?

Party officials think so. They proudly point to the fact that all the GOP members of the House of Representatives stuck together last week and voted against the Democrats' $819 billion economic stimulus plan, and to how the Senate, which is due to begin debate on the plan Monday, is full of similarly skeptical Republicans.

"We'll look back to that (House) vote as one of the most significant votes Republicans cast. It gave them a very coherent voice," said Michael Franc, a political analyst at the conservative Heritage Foundation.

That's right, the big plan is to run as opponents of President Popular. Polling suggests this is as stupid as it sounds.

Pollster Stanley Greenberg tells us "62 percent favor Obama’s economic recovery plan while 28 percent oppose it," that "Obama’s economic plan is popular in the 13 states that are expected to have competitive races for US Senate seats in 2010," and that "There is strong support for the plan among voters in the 40 Congressional districts where Democrats are expected to have the toughest time holding seats in 2010." The support numbers for all of those points is above 60%.

Never bother a Republican with reality though. They just know this is the best idea anyone ever had.

Hey, opposing the president is always a sensible plan. That's how Obama made his name in the first place -- by opposing the Iraq war long before it became fashionable to do it.

While Obama's popularity lasts, there's nothing the Repubs can do to unseat him. But (unless he dies in office) it won't last forever - probably in about 5-6 years' time, when US troops are still dying in out-of-the-way places, people are still out of work, and more countries are overtaking the US in living standards, the Repubs will say: "See, we told you this wouldn't work", and that'll be their comeback plan.

It's just politics as usual.
