Boehner Spokesman: Being Gay a Choice, Being Religious is Not

There are only two words to describe this argument; "bass" and "ackward."

Raw Story:

You were born a Christian, not born gay. Religion is not a choice.

Or so the spokesman for House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) would have you believe. Questioned about why the House's top Republican opposes a hate crimes bill penalizing violence against gays, his spokesman said he "supports existing federal protections (based on race, religion, gender, etc) based on immutable characteristics," just not protections for things like being gay -- which conservatives occasionally claim is a choice.

"He does not support adding sexual orientation to the list of protected classes," Boehner spokesman Kevin Smith added. The statement was made in an email to CBS News.

In other words, religion is a trait you're born with.

It's funny, but these people have invented a snake oil "therapy" to get people to stop being so damned gay, but no one needs any sort of therapy to convert to another religion. As always, right wing arguments contradict each other.

Seems one is a choice and one is an "immutable characteristic" and, in typical GOP fashion, a Republican spokesman has them completely backwards.

of the THOUSANDS of gay men and women I've met NONE of them have chosen to be gay. NOT ONE.

This man is ignorant and dangerous. Coming out is a traumatic experience for most people.

Not to be glib, but I've met thousands of Christians and NONE of them have chosen to be Christian. NOT ONE.

@JSN:

Funny, my Mother chose to become a Christian. That's the definition of a 'Born again Christian'. I was given a choice to become a Christian.

Not to be glib, but: I went to a church FULL of people who chose to become Christian. I met thousands of them.

Oh, you're playing with semantics? As in: "They didn't choose to become Christian, God chose them". Yep, I've met born-again's who try to say that. Shame it only works on people of their calibre.

The fact is, when you're born into a Christian family, there is no dilemma for you at first. You've been brainwashed, how would you know different? However, if you're lucky enough to be allowed to see the real world by your family you will see 'others'.

After that point you will be constantly questioning your belief. In effect; constantly choosing to be Christian.

oddly I had to be taught religion but not taught to be straight (nor my brother taught to be gay). so that would imply religion was the learned behavior, and sexuality was something born with.

I guess all those missionaries are wasting their time trying to convert folks who weren't born Christian then
