STATEMENT FROM RNC CHAIRMAN MICHAEL STEELE ON DEBT CEILING LAW

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele released the following statement today:

“This afternoon President Obama sat behind closed doors and with no cameras present signed into law a bill increasing America’s credit card limit from $12.3 trillion to $14.2 trillion.  With a simple stroke of his pen, President Obama now has the ability to continue his binge spending agenda to the tune of an additional $1.9 trillion, the largest one-time increase in our history.  If the president thinks he can hide his embarrassing binge spending habit behind a thin fig leaf like PAYGO, then he truly has hit rock bottom. While the Democrats spend their President’s Day recess celebrating their failed $862 billion stimulus package, the taxpayers will continue to foot the bill for the Democrats’ fiscal irresponsibility.”

So I did the natural thing; I went and checked to see how many times the debt ceiling had been raised under Bush. I seemed to remember this was a pretty common occurrence and damned if I wasn't right -- according to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the debt ceiling was raised seven times under Bush. GWB began his term with a debt ceiling of $5.9 trillion and left office with a ceiling of nearly double that -- $11.3 trillion. In the "embarrassing binge spending" game, Obama's a piker.

I asked twitter why the right was only freaking out about this now and got a pretty good answer. "Well isn't it obvious? Bush never raised it as HIGH as Obama did."

Well played, Lars Olsson. Well played.

Besides the more obvious reasons, part of the problem might be the same one that leads people to shoot the messenger when the news is bad. In this case the Obama admin. is the messenger.
