Stories to Watch: 12/17/12

James Dobson blames the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut on abortion and gays getting married. What a terrible, terrible excuse for a human being that man is.

Meanwhile, Tea Party Nation blames teachers unions. Those people lost their lives trying to protect those kids, as we can see in this example. Union teachers were the day's heroes and Tea Party Nation is a giant steaming pile of shit. Bonus fun: TPN advises you pull your kids out of school and home-school them, so they don't get the crazy sort of liberal ideas that turn kids into homicidal maniacs. The problem: Adam Lanza was home-schooled.

Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, says gun owners must be prepared to shoot anti-gun politicians. He is likewise shit.

Time for year-end "listicles"; i.e., lists presented as articles. You know, "Ten Best Movies of 2012," that sort of thing. In general, the best are usually kind of interesting but mostly lazy. The worst we won't talk about. This one, however is always worth your time: Poynter's "The Year in Error." Watching the press screw things all up can be fun.

Sens. Joe Manchin and Mark Warner come out in favor of gun control.

Harry Reid makes it clear that gun control will be addressed in the senate.

Newtown was actually a disaster waiting to happen.

Josh Marshall notes that the gun lobby's version of American history is complete bullshit.

The public still backs Obama in the fiscal cliff talks, which explains why Boehner is starting to look like he's caving. The emphasis here is "look like": he needs to cave a lot more.

RIP Sen. Daniel Inouye, hero.

Finally, gaming the electoral college is the new GOP gerrymandering. They're bound and determined to steal an election somehow. If voter suppression doesn't work, maybe this will. They'll try anything -- with the exception of trying to appeal to a wider range of voters. Then again, the GOP represents their big money donors, not voters, anyway.
