The National Rifle Association has gained more than 100,000 new members in the past 18 days, the organization told POLITICO’s Playbook on Thursday.
The number of paid new members jumped from 4.1 million to 4.2 million during that time.“Our goal is to get to 5 million before this debate is over,” the NRA told POLITICO’s Mike Allen.
Wow, 100,000 new members. That’s like… almost none, statistically. A Gallup poll in 2011 found that 34% of adults personally own a gun. The census shows that there are about 232,000,000 adults living in the US, this means that there are roughly 78,880,000 gun owners in the US. the NRA’s 100K new recruits account for 0.1% of all gun owners. Their current membership of 4.2 million accounts for 5%. The target membership of 5 million is 6%.
The vast, vast majority of gun owners in the country don’t belong to the NRA. They represent almost no one.
Color me underwhelmed.
