Poll: Obama knocked it out of the park

The Hill:

A majority of people who watched President Obama’s State of the Union speech said they had a positive reaction to the address, according to a new poll.

The CNN/ORC poll released after Obama’s address on Tuesday found that 53 percent of viewers said they had a “very positive” reaction. The poll also found that 24 percent of viewers said they had a “somewhat positive” response to Obama’s speech and 22 percent said they had a negative response to the speech.

The poll also found that 71 percent of viewers said the policies Obama touched on will direct the country in the right direction. Meanwhile, 26 percent of viewers said Obama’s policies will take the country in the wrong direction.

Additionally, 58 percent of those surveyed said Obama’s fifth State of the Union was better than his second inaugural address in January.

That 53% figure is soft-peddling it a little bit. They separate the “verys” from the “somewhats,” but lump all the negatives together. Put more starkly, 77% had a positive reaction, compared with 22% who reacted negatively.

Further findings:

  • About 7 in 10 agreed with the President on gun control, saying it would “move the country in the right direction.”
  • Three quarters agreed with the President on immigration.
  • Two thirds believe the President’s economic proposals, such as raising the minimum wage, would help create jobs.

Republicans can ignore those numbers if they want, but they’d just be whistling past the graveyard.
