Stories to Watch 3/12/13

Gun violence protest

The Senate Judiciary Committee clears bills to expand background checks and improve schools safety. Action on two bills that would ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines have been postponed -- probably not a good sign for those measures. Remember, this is an ongoing fight. We don't have to win everything at once.

If you need a good sign of something, the NRA seems about ready to cave on background checks.

Gun owners are increasingly buying guns for personal safety, not for hunting or target shooting, a new poll shows. Interestingly, people who don't own guns cite safety as the main reason why they don't own firearms. One group has a much more realistic view of firearms than the other. Guess which.

Perhaps Ashley Judd is not in as strong a position as had been previously reported. Still, on the long list of things that are always worth a shot, unseating Mitch McConnell has got to be up near the top. And, of course, it's a long way to election day, so a lot can change -- and a lot seems ready to change.

Remember how the last Paul Ryan budget plan was a heady mix of rightwing fantasy, fuzzy math, and wishful thinking? Apparently Paulie thinks that sort of thing is working for him. Romney/Ryan was rejected by the voters -- including pretty much this same approach to budget policy. Why Republicans think it'll be a winner this time is a bit of a mystery.

Although, Fox News lets it be known that YOU DON'T GET TO SAY BAD THINGS ABOUT PAUL RYAN'S BUDGET! LALALALA! FOX CAN'T HEAR YOU! LALALALA!

Also in Paul Ryan news: he accidentally slips up and tells the truth, saying that Republicans "are not going to give up on destroying the health care system for the American people."

In 1972, Bob Woodward was handed the keys to the Watergate scandal on a silver platter. Since then, he's made a career out of being a dishonest hack with an undeserved reputation as a giant of journalism.

Speaking of crappy journalism; the Koch Bros may be looking at buying a newspaper or three.

Karl Rove just can't move on from the 2012 election night.

Finally; Pope? Nope.
