Stories to Watch: 8/29/13

Fast food workers around the country strike for a living wage (photos here). Needless to say, the right finds the idea that someone working a full-time job should make enough to survive hilarious. These are the same clowns who don't think people should be able to get food stamps either.  So basically, it's "Cook my burger and starve, peasant!" And they wonder why everyone thinks they're pricks.

Speaking of rightwing pricks, a conservative talk show host uses the occasion of yesterday's commemorative March on Washington to "deliver an epic rant accusing Jews, gays, African Americans and Muslims of being pawns of the Satanic left," to applaud the killing of Trayvon Martin, and to hope "that faggot" Dan Savage dies. So, you know, a typical day in conservative media. Normally, they spread this stuff out throughout the day on different shows, but the truth is that none of these topics are especially unusual.

Conservatives were "outraged" (scare quotes because they're always outraged) to find out that newly-minted Senator Tim Scott wasn't invited to speak at the March on Washington yesterday, citing this as proof that conservative African-Americans just weren't welcome. The real story is less exciting. Turns out that Scott originally told organizers he wouldn't attend, then complained that he wasn't invited to speak -- perhaps realizing the opportunity to play the well-worn conservative victim card. In any case, this wingnut outrage of the moment -- like most wingnut outrages of the moment -- is built on a foundation of bullshit.

We're spending a stupid amount of money on spy crap.

A Maine conservative posts a photo of Pres. Obama with the message "Shoot the ni**er" on his Facebook page. Not surprisingly, this caught the attention of the Secret Service. But don't worry, David Marsters of Sabattus -- who is described as a "conservative candidate for Maine town selectman" -- says it's silly to think this could ever be racist or a threat to the president. Mostly because he got caught and he's a coward, I think. If you're going to put this stuff up in public, own it. I thought conservatives were big on personal responsibility.

Republicans are driving scientists out of the party. For those keeping track, they join women, African-Americans, Latinos, people in the LGBT community, atheists, Muslims, Wiccans, minimum wage workers, teachers ... Oh hell, it's easier just to list who the GOP has left: white evangelical males. The end.

The UN pulls weapons inspectors out of Syria, fearing imminent air strikes by the US.

is this first step in getting rid of the onerous no-fly list?

Pres. Obama signs further executive orders regulating firearms. The blood lobby whines about it like it's the end of the world, but that's what they always do, so fuck 'em.
