Stories to Watch: 9/16/13

What we know about the Navy Yard shootings so far.

The Washington Nationals-Atlanta Braves game has been postponed until tomorrow night. The stadium is very near the Navy Yard.

The day's most ironic headline, via Dave Weigel: "Senate Hearing on Gun Laws Postponed Due to Navy Yard Shooting." In other words, gun violence is now so common that it's interfering with our efforts to control gun violence. If that's not the cancer stage, I don't know what is.

Hey, guess what? Racists are stupid. You'll probably be less than surprised to learn that some of these stupid racists work for Fox News.

David Brooks is terrible.

Obamacare is unpopular, but only a small minority want elected politicians to sabotage it.

Larry Summers has withdrawn his name as a possible replacement for Ben Bernanke as Fed chief, but the behind-the-scenes reason is a little hilarious. According to The Atlantic's David Graham, "Summers would have required at least four Republican votes to clear the Senate Banking Committee, and around 10 from the wider Senate to reach the 60-vote threshold likely needed to overcome GOP procedural obstruction." This allowed a relatively small group of lefties to sink Summers by promising to oppose him. In other words, Republican obstructionism guaranteed a more liberal appointee than if they just wanted an up-or-down vote.

Finally, John Boehner has given up all pretense of leading the House GOP, so he asks President Obama to do it for him.
