Stories to Watch: 3/12/14

Spying and torture apologist Sen. Dianne Feinstein has not been having the best week. Says Edward Snowden, "We’re seeing another ‘Merkel Effect,’ where an elected official does not care at all that the rights of millions of ordinary citizens are violated by our spies, but suddenly it’s a scandal when a politician finds out the same thing happens to them." No matter how you feel about Snowden, it's hard to argue that he didn't hit the nail on the head.

NYT reports that Pres. Obama will pursue a "broad expansion" of overtime pay. Apparently, businesses get out of paying workers what they owe them by claiming the employees are "executive or professional" and therefore exempt from overtime requirements. This is something the President can do through the Dept. of Labor, stepping around a do-nothing congress. So expect Republicans to howl.

Real bad news for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. A new poll has him tied in his gubernatorial race with Democratic challenger Mary Burke. This in itself is not especially good for him, but when you consider the pollster is Rasmussen -- which typically favors the Republican candidate -- the finding likely puts Scooter somewhat behind. That email scandal really left a mark.

An Oklahoma Fox station censors the relaunched science series Cosmos by editing out all mention of evolution. Climb back up into the trees, everyone. Apparently, we're supposed to unlearn science. So much of Cosmos is about how mankind had moved beyond this sort of witch doctor crap. How incredibly depressing.

Last night, a Florida seat that has been held by a Republican for 23 years went again Republican in a special election. For some reason, this is supposed to forecast something about Democrats' chances in 2014. It doesn't. Duh.

The next time some tool tells you that raising the minimum wage hurts job growth and the economy, go ahead and show them this. Kind of looks like it does the opposite.

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says that the administration won't impose penalties for not getting health coverage this year -- for all intents and purposes delaying the Obamacare individual mandate until next tax season.

Finally, China releases what they say are satellite photos of a debris field that may have been caused by Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
