News Roundup for 5/25/11

Ryan with background of flames
How voters see Paul Ryan

-Headline of the day-
"NY-26 Loss shows GOP must more aggressively promote Ryan reforms."

Last night there was an election to replace the naked CraigsList guy and a commie won. It was awful. The election hinged on whether people wanted to keep Medicare or, as Rep. Paul Ryan suggests, replace it with coupons from the Sunday paper. Voters in New York's 26th congressional district chose to keep it.

And, of course, the whole election was "Medicare this" and "Medicare that," as if the whole thing were somehow the government's business. Turned out that voters hated Ryan's plan and voted to shoot the Republican, Jane Corwin, into space. It was a debacle.

Anyway, what this all shows is that the GOP absolutely must bring up Ryan's Medicare plan as much as possible and be 100% supportive of it. Republicans need to get out there and get behind Paul Ryan's Medicare message because, if there's one thing that the voter's rejection of the Ryan plan proves, it's that the Ryan plan is a winner! Think about it; otherwise why would Democrats be so afraid of it? Huh? Huh? Yeah, you can't answer that...

Stories to Watch: 5/10/11

Freakin' insanely nice here today. 80 degrees. I actually kept the windows closed so it would stay cool in here. Now here's the news...

Fox News is oh-so cross that President Obama will have the "vile rapper" Common at the White House for a poetry event. But Fox has had a different take on Common in the past.

Rand Paul, stalwart defender of the military-industrial complex.

Republican plans to privatize Medicare are rapidly crumbling as GOPers, sensing an electoral iceberg, begin to jump ship.

Karl Rove's American Crossroads PAC is sinking $650 mil. into Jane Corwin's flailing NY-26 run.

Charles Koch "gives" $1.5 million to Florida State University. Why the quotes? Koch gets input on hiring decisions for the school's economics department in exchange. Let's just drop the quotes and say he bought Florida State's economics department outright. Luckily, this isn't sitting well with a lot of people who think an economic flatearther like Koch shouldn't be allowed within eyesight of the department. If they lose this one, expect an economics degree from Florida State to be almost worthless in the job market.

In news that'll cause a lot of excitement, but will ultimately go nowhere: liberals in Arizona want to split off into a new state.

Kevin Drum argues that John Boehner's insane hostage demands regarding the debt ceiling are a bluff.

Finally, Michael Heick of Amherst, NY is a Grade A prick.

Stories to Watch: 5/9/11

I thought I was going to have those javascript animated buttons up at the Tumblr blog this weekend, but it turned out not to be the weekend I imagined it would be. It was better. Which means I was out, not getting work done, pouring beer into my face -- like a good Wisconsinite. The buttons can wait. Now here's the news...

Rightwinger Byron York looks at the entire 2012 GOP presidential field and finds a winner -- none of the above.

Newt Gingrich announces that he'll announce his candidacy on Wednesday. You read that right, he's announcing his announcement. This isn't the actual announcement, this is the announcement of the announcement. I think I've got his campaign motto: "Gingrich '12: Watch This Space."

Erick Erickson strangles Jon Huntsman's candidacy in its crib, because Erick Erick the most important little pundit ever.

Donald Trump once allowed a black man to win a game show, which proves he's the least racist person on Earth. Unfortunately for The Donald, said black man does not agree with that assessment.

Polling shows that the Republican Party splitting into two parties is becoming more realistic as time goes on.

Krugman breaks with political fashion by using the word "elite" correctly.

Sen. Rob Portman is not the most popular man on campus... at least, not at the University of Michigan Law School.

Finally, in the special election to fill the NY-26 seat, Jane Corwin continues to sink after backing Paul Ryan's fantasy-economics porn.
