Even in Mississippi, openly homophobic bigotry is becoming bad politics

Maddow Blog - Gay couple in Mississippi asks for marriage license. You'll never guess what happened
Laura Conaway: The Southern Equality campaign continues its swing through Mississippi. Last week, same-sex couples tried to get marriage licenses in the southern part of the state. On Wednesday, a couple that includes a member of the Air Force Reserve got turned down in tiny Poplarville.

Today in the capital city of Jackson, more couples asked for the right to marry. That’s one of them, pictured above (photo by Jessica Bowman of WLBT).
As far as protest and awareness efforts go, this is pretty run of the mill stuff, really. Laudable and worthwhile in putting a human face on an issue that may lack them for some, but hardly unusual.

And that’s when Conaway makes a good catch:

After one of the couples today got turned down, Clarion-Ledger reporter Dustin Barnes tweeted that “sounds of laughter could be heard in clerk’s office." A few minutes later, Barnes added more. "Hinds Circuit Clerk Barbara Dunn said when gay man cried in her office about denial of marriage license, 1 of her employees almost cried too," he tweeted. “Dunn said she was sure her employees weren’t laughing at same-sex couples who were denied marriage license in Jxn today." I know it may not seem like much in blue states, but I can tell you from experience that when it’s no longer acceptable for there to be any hint of making fun of gay couples in Mississippi — and when it’s OK to show some empathy for them — you’re looking at real change.
It may not seem like it sometimes, but progress is being made every day. That said, let’s see if we can’t speed it up a bit.

The Contrary Party

Washington Post’s WonkBlog:

A New York judge isn’t the only one taking aim at New York City’s ban on large, sugary drinks.

In a move to prevent such regulations from taking hold elsewhere, Mississippi legislators have passed an “anti-Bloomberg bill” that bars counties from passing and enacting laws that require calorie counts to be posted or caps the size of beverages or foods. You can read it here.

The legislation is now on Gov. Phil Bryant’s desk and NPR reports that he is expected to sign it. Mississippi, it’s worth noting here, already has the highest obesity rate in the country.

Is there any danger of Yankee Mike Bloomberg swooping down from the Big Apple to take Mississippians God-Given Right to Big Gulps away? I’ll let you go ahead and figure that one out on your own. Suffice it to say that the government of Mississippi is on the verge of solving something that was in absolutely no danger of ever becoming a problem. Although, from the sound of it, the state would save a lot of healthcare money if they took a similar position.

But this is what the GOP has reduced itself to — weird stunts of contrariness, designed to score points off the idea that liberals are always wrong about everything. In this case, it’s merely goofy and stupid. In other cases, it’s deadly — although giant silos of sugar-glop aren’t exactly the healthiest things ever.

When talk of meaningful gun regulation began after the Sandy Hook Massacre, Republicans in many states went fullblown contrarian. Liberals thought fewer guns were the answer, so they wrote bills designed to put more guns on the streets and loosen already nearly non-existent gun laws. As a result, we have school workers getting shot in firearms training classes in Texas and Sheriff Joe Arpaio sending sex offenders to “protect” schoolkids as part of an armed posse program in Arizona. Fewer guns? Ha! More guns! Everywhere! Now! Not because it’s actually a good idea, but because it’ll piss off those damned liberals. This is the sort of governance we’d expected from a five-year old who won’t share because he thinks it’s funny when his sister cries.

At bottom, the point of these laws is to score cheap political points with gullible asses who believe Sean Hannity is a towering intellect. If that means a few of those same gullible dopes get shot — or, in Mississippi’s case, develop type II diabetes — well, you can’t make an omelet without breaking a few chumps. Those chumps are getting exactly the government they deserve. Unfortunately, the smarter residents they’re so busy trying to troll have to live with this boneheaded crap too.

News Roundup for 3/9/12

Jed Clampett
Mitt Romney

-Headline of the Day-
"Romney woos Southerners: I had some ‘cheesy grits’ at the Hilton, y’all."

Hoo-dangit! That ol' Mitt Romney fella was down there in Pascagoula, Mississippi and danged if he didn't fit right in. Bein' in the south and all, Mittens reckoned this'd be a fine time to start playin' to them stereotypes.

Mitt told a crowd that "strange things are happening to me." He was fixin' to have him a boney fied transformation right up there on that stage! It was riveting. "I am learning to say y’all, and I like grits and things," he told them. Who doesn't like grits and things? Whenever I go out for breakfast, I always tell the waitress, "Have the cook whip me up a big ol' honkin' plate of them grits and things." They always know what you mean.

Then, in Jackson, Romney got downright homey. "Mornin’ y’all," he told the crowd. "Good to be with you."

"I got started right this morning with a biscuit and some cheesy grits, I’ll tell ya. Delicious," he added. "Hilton Garden Inn knows just what to serve me in the morning."

He then went on to praise The Dukes of Hazzard, tell everyone how much he loves chawin' tobbaccy, and played the spoons on his knee. "Y'all love me yet?" he asked. "Because I've got a banjo back on the bus, if that's what it takes." (Raw Story)

-Bonus HotD-
"Confirmed: Fracking Caused Ohio Earthquakes."

Maybe we shouldn't be doing it then?

Naw... Now is not the time to be rational. (ThinkProgress)

Stories to Watch: 2/15/12

Have I plugged the Superfeed lately? Every item today comes from it, with the exception of the dog show story. I've come to rely on it. Now here's the news...

How completely insane are the CPAC wingnuts? This insane. Be advised, these are the people the GOP gets their marching orders from these days -- totally batshit-crazy nutjobs.

More fun with rightwing insanity: according to Fox, liberals want birth control as part of an anti-poverty genocide.

Iowa Republicans consider a completely unconstitutional total ban on abortion.

Rick Santorum comes out against the entire concept of health insurance. No, seriously. And this clown's polling better than Romney? Really?

An adorable little dust mop takes the top slot at the Westminster Dog Show. Not politics, but all work and no play...

The GOP is really serious about their suicidal stance on contraception coverage.

Mississippi Republican Becky Currie's plan to make undocumented people stink.

Mittens is both pro- and anti-porn. I'm pro-porn and booze and generally every vice that doesn't require a needle in your arm. It's what you call your "liberty." Seriously, look up the term "libertine" sometime. Pick the right side, Mitt. Embrace your pornographer funding.

Finally, embattled Wisco Gov. Scott Walker seeks to ride Obama's coattails. Tells you all you need to know about the way this "swing state" will probably swing.
