Stories to Watch: 8/17/12

Mitt Romney's campaign digs in on secrecy, the tax return scandal, and vague policy positions. In short, the message is "just trust us on the stuff we say -- we don't have to prove squat to anyone."

The headline says it all: "Paul Ryan Slams Obama For Not Saving Auto Plant That Closed Under Bush." Remember, Paul's the super-serious wonky one!

It's shit like this that makes our political discourse in America so damned dumb. Can we please not confuse the politics section with freakin' Tiger Beat? We need less "Paul Ryan is so dreamy!" and more "Paul Ryan is a bullshit artist."

Dana Milbank falls into his lazy "both sides are just as bad" mode and winds up sticking up for a virulently anti-gay hate group. In a few years, this article will look as stupid as if he'd written, "The KKK isn't really all that bad..." Yes Dana, they really are that bad. Family Research Council really is a hate group.

In case you've forgotten, here's a reminder: Geraldo Rivera's a clown.

Hey, you over there with the gun-boner: if this is how you're going to convince people you're not crazy, you're not going to have a lot of luck. Seriously, what kind of paranoid coward needs to be armed to feel safe at the public library?

Finally, Moscow bans gay pride parades for a century. Expect a column from Dana Milbank on how the Kremlin isn't terribly homophobic and how gays share some of the blame for their oppression.
