The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 4/30/07

I'd make a tossed fruit salad joke, but that'd really corny. Oh wait, I just did...

-Compact fluorescents aren't catching on-
And for really stupid reasons. According to reports, the bulbs fail the 'wife test.' It turns out that women don't like them because of their "initial flicker, slow warm-up and slightly weird color..." The color argument is bullshit, take it from an expert on lightbulbs. I buy Sylvania Daylight Extra bulbs and they're the same color as incandescents -- that's why I buy them, so I can use them for photography. Color in lamps is measured in degrees kelvin -- if you heat tungsten to a certain temperature, it will put out a certain color of light. My bulbs have a color temperature of 3500k; nice and cold to get that amberish light you get from regular bulbs. There is no measurable difference. And the 'initial flicker' and 'slow warm-up?' It's less than a second, ladies. How big of a hurry can you possibly be in? They're roughly 75% more efficient -- learn to live with it. (Washington Post)

-It'd be a real accomplishment no matter what-
Miles Hilton-Barber of the UK has become the first blind pilot to fly a microlight from London to Sydney, Australia. That's right, a blind guy. 13,500 miles. That's a hell of a long way to go in a microlight (which is basically a kite with a motor) sighted or not. Hilton-Barber was accompanied on the final leg by a sighted co-pilot, Richard Meredith-Hardy. He hopes to use the flight to raise a million pounds for Seeing is Believing, the World Health Organization's program to end preventable blindness worldwide. (BBC)

-I'm being all healthy and stuff... Here I thought I was just screwing around-
Did I ever mention I can juggle? I can and it's as much fun as it looks. I came across a blog on Reddit that lists the health effects of juggling. It's aerobic, it makes you somewhat ambidextrous -- which is as handy as you'd think -- it relieves stress, it improves hand-eye coordination, on and on and on. The post lists the top ten health bennies from juggling. I'd imagine these benefits are offset if you juggle machetes, axes, chainsaws, or lit torches, so stay away from those. Otherwise, there's no downside. Juggling's also way easier than it looks and chicks dig it. Big bonus -- being able to juggle requires an epiphany. Once you understand how it's done, you can do it. It's a beautiful, zen-like moment. Go learn and pretend it's really hard to do. (Just Your Average Joggeler)
