The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 8/21/07

Typical school voucher opponents

-They hate Jesus, too-
Proponents of a private school voucher scheme in Utah have resorted to tactics that can be called dishonest at best and insane at worst. Voters are being push polled by Parents for Choice in Education. A "pollster" calls you up and asks voters whether they support the voucher scheme and, if they say no, "the 'pollster' then asks if they would still oppose vouchers if they knew that a 'liberal national teachers' union' that supports same-sex marriage opposes them."

Two problems here -- one, it's not true -- the National Education Association predictably has no stand on same sex marriage. See, it's not exactly an education issue. And, two, even if it were, what the hell would these two issues have to do with each other anyway? The voucher scheme is not expected to pass -- no one's interested in taking advantage of it, since there are almost no private schools in Utah. I guess desperate times call for desperate measures and insane times call for insane measures. (Wall of Separation)

-If you need it, it's good to know-
Students in Svalbard, Norway are being taught to use a shotgun at the beginning of every school year at the University Center. The problem is polar bears. "It's absolutely necessary," said UNIS director Gunnar Sand.

"Polar bears are one thing," Sand noted. "Even more dangerous is the extreme cold, and the winds. There also are dangerous glaciers, steep cliffs, and it's a long way between settlements."

The University Center in Svalbard is the nothernmost college in the world, offering courses in Arctic Biology, Arctic Geology, Arctic Geophysics, Arctic Technology, and Arctic Bear Avoidance Strategies. (UPI)
