The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 8/22/07

Helicopters from 'Apocalypse Now'
Cue Ride of the Valkyries

-I guess the phone book doesn't count-
An AP-Ipsos poll finds that 1 in 4 americans haven't read a book in the past year. Among the findings, "34 percent of conservatives have not read a book within the past year, compared with 22 percent of liberals and moderates."

Pat Schroeder, president of the American Association of Publishers, explains it this way, "The Karl Roves of the world have built a generation that just wants a couple slogans: 'No, don't raise my taxes, no new taxes.' It's pretty hard to write a book saying, 'No new taxes, no new taxes, no new taxes' on every page."

Evil conservative elf Michelle Malkin puts it another way, "Me conservative, me no read books." (Think Progress)

-Headline of the day-
"Bush's Vietnam Lesson: Stay in Iraq." Not only does Bush say we should stay in Iraq, but his argument suggests we never should've pulled out of Vietnam -- seriously. (Sydney Morning Herald)

-The beautiful and universal language of porn-
Israeli sex site operators report getting a lot of traffic from "Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt, and the Palestinian Authority." "We get hundreds of hits from surfers that live in countries where porn is prohibited," said Gil Naftali, owner of the israeli porn site, SexV. "We don't have an Arabic version because users log in to watch photos and video clips that require no explanations." Some things require no translation. (YNetNews)
