The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 1/4/08

Chris Dodd in winter landscape
Can you spot Chris Dodd?

-Still in it-
Democratic hopeful Sen. Chris Dodd saw his presidential hopefulness die quietly in the Iowa caucuses. My explanation of the failure of his campaign to take off is that he's a pale white guy with white hair -- in an Iowan winter, that makes you literally invisible. People would show up to events, see white on white, assume he didn't show, and go back home.

However, Dodd's been one of the better legislators running -- like Dennis Kucinich, he's actually still bothered to do his job. His work at blocking telcom immunity for Bush's illegal wiretapping program has been dismissed as an election year stunt by many, but that argument also died a quiet death last night when Dodd vowed to keep up that fight. In his concession email to his supporters, he wrote, "The fight to restore the Constitution and stop retroactive immunity does not end with my Presidential campaign. FISA will come back in a few weeks and my pledge to filibuster ANY bill that includes retroactive immunity remains operative."

He may have bowed out early, but Chris Dodd deserves our thanks. I'm not the only one who thinks so, either -- the story's #1 on reddit right now. (The Seminal, via reddit)

-Headline of the day-
"Women and gay men are 'worst drivers'." A study from psychologists at Queen Mary, University of London, finds that late night talk show hosts and stand up comics have been right for decades. In future studies, researchers expect to find out why men can't remember to put the seat down, why old people drive for miles with their turn signal on, and what's the deal with airline food. (Telegraph)

-Bonus HotD-
"Romney: People don't want change in the White House."

You know, it's that sort of brilliant analysis and keen eye for political trends that makes it really surprising that he got whupped in Iowa by a dumbass rube who doesn't know crap. (Think Progress)
