The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 5/19/08

Earth from space
Turns out it takes longer than a week to make one of these things

-Headline of the day-
"University Sued for Saying Earth Not Created in 6 Days."

According to the report, "The University of California at Berkeley is being sued for statements on their Understanding Evolution Web site that some religious beliefs contradict science -- like the idea that the Earth and living things were finished up in six days." Plaintiffs in the suit claim that this amounts to using government funding to say that "some religious denominations are better than others."

If by "better" they mean "less stupid, willfully ignorant, and completely insane," then yeah, some denominations are better than others.

Unfortunately for the suit-happy creationists, UC Berkley's site doesn't say anything like that. It merely states the facts. That the facts are contrary to what a bunch of morons want them to be isn't really the school's problem. It's the bunch of morons' problem. The scientific knowledge of the first century AD isn't exactly the most solid data available.

Where are the right wingers who always complain about "frivolous lawsuits" now? I guess when they do it, it's OK. They are, after all, tight with Jesus and everything. (Discover Magazine, via reddit)

-The dream is dead-
I've always described the neocons as dreamers. It's a bad dream, but there ya go. They're a bunch of nutsacks who think of themselves as visionaries and their vision is to own the damned world.

Turns out that world domination is going to have to wait for a little while. The premier neocon organization, the Project for a New American Century (PNAC), has shut down their website. Whereas visitors used to be greeted with this:

The Project for the New American Century is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to a few fundamental propositions: that American leadership is good both for America and for the world; and that such leadership requires military strength, diplomatic energy and commitment to moral principle.

They're now greeted by this:

First the news that Dick Cheney's just phoning it in, now this. It's looking more and more like these guys just don't have their heart in evildoing anymore. (Think Progress)

-Poetry verse of the day-
Ah ! well a-day ! what evil looks
Had I from old and young !
Instead of the cross, the Albatross
About my neck was hung.

-- Samuel Taylor Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

What made me think of the mariner with an albatross around his neck? A headline that reads, "Bush plans active campaign role for GOP" and a factoid from the story:

In the latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll last month, 28 percent approved of the job Bush is doing, his lowest rating ever in the survey...

I think a wiser role for Bush would be to sit down and shut up. He can only help Democrats, so here's hoping the wiser role doesn't occur to him. (AP)
