The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 6/10/08

Carrie Nation
John McCain, prohibitionist

-Headline of the day-
"McCain: 'I will veto every single beer.'"

He's so not going to carry Wisconsin.

Actually, that's just McCain screwing up. According to the report, "In a slip of the tongue while railing against excessive earmarks at the National Small Business Summit in Washington, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee inadvertently pledged to veto the popular alcoholic beverage."

"I will use the veto as needed. I will veto every single beer -- bill with earmarks," McCain told the assembled tiny businessfolk in DC. Beer baron wife Cindy could not be reached for comment. (CNN)

-Fist bumped off the air-
FOX newsmodel E.D. Hill finds her FOX show "American Pulse" cancelled after calling a fist bump between Barack Obama and his wife Michelle a "terrorist fist jab." She's got to be wondering what exactly it was she did wrong.

After all, fellow foxbots Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly pull that kind of crap all the time and they're not nearly so easy on the eyes -- how do they rate? Hell, O'Reilly once issued an al Qaeda fatwa on the city of San Francisco. You'd think that would be a little more serious.

I guess trying to read FOX execs' minds is a fruitless endeavor. They don't have minds to read. (Think Progress)

-Today's schadenfreude brought to you by...-
...the right wing evangelical movement. Turns out there aren't as many Biblebanging nutbags as the Biblebanging nutbags would have you believe. While they claim to number about 16 million, other counts have them at 4 mil or less.

Ouch.

It gets worse (or, from my perspective, better); "We have peaked," Southern Baptist statistician Ed Stetzer wrote in an online commentary on the latest statistics from 2007. "...For now, Southern Baptists are a denomination in decline." Seems that Southern Baptists aren't doing nearly as much Southern Baptizing as they used to.

According to the report, "Annual rates of baptisms have steadily declined not only in recent years, but also during the past 35 years. In 2007, Southern Baptist churches reported 345,941 baptisms. That's down 12% from 2002 and 22% from 1972."

Of course, one way to fix that would be to have lots and lots of sex, but SBs are against even dancing -- there's no way they're going to recommend the horizontal shimmy. Their answer; launch a website. Seriously.

Yeah, that ought to turn everything right around... (MoJo Blog)
