The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 6/13/08

Happy National John McCain Day!

-It's Friday the 13th-
Someone send John McCain a card. (Me)

-Schadenfreude with polls-
A variant of "Fun with polls," only meaner-spirited. Which makes it perfect for me.

Turns out that Friday the 13th isn't a day of good news for Republicans, as a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll finds that prospects for that party in November look bleak. While 63% of Democrats call themselves "enthusiastic" about voting this fall, only 37% of Republicans describe themselves this way. To make matters worse, 36% say they aren't enthusiastic at all.

In addition, 53% of voters said that they expected Obama to win the election, while 44% say the confetti will drop on McCain's head. "In recent elections, the public has a good track record at predicting the outcome of presidential elections," says CNN polling director Keating Holland.

Taken all together, the signs suggest that betting Obama in the office pool may not be much of a gamble. Asked for comment, John McCain crossed his fingers, spun around, and said, "No jinx! No jinx!" repeatedly. (CNN)

-Headline of the day-
"Mike Huckabee to have his own soapbox on Fox News."

That's right, FOX News is hiring former presidential candidate and creationist crackpot Mike Huckabee as a "political analyst." Not known for being much of a deep thinker, Mike's quick with a oneliner, so there's that.

Of course, not all of Huckabee's jokes go over that well. He once joked about someone pointing a gun at Barack Obama.

Then again, this would be the same FOX News that recently caught hell for calling Michelle Obama Barack's "baby mama" and for commenting on the couple's "terrorist fist jab."

Mike ought to fit right in. (LA Times)

-Who are you and what have you done with John McCain?-
John McCain on yesterday's Supreme Court decision on habeas corpus and Guantanamo:

The United States Supreme Court yesterday rendered a decision which I think is one of the worst decisions in the history of this country. Senator Graham, and Senator Lieberman, and I…made it very clear that these are enemy combatants, these are people who are not citizens. They do not and never have been given the rights that citizens of this country have.

McCain in 2003 in a letter to George W. Bush (co-signed by noted asswipe Lindsey Graham):

Yet, we firmly believe it is now time to make a decision on how the United States will move forward regarding the detainees, and to take that important next step. A serious process must be established in the very near term either to formally treat and process the detainees as war criminals or to return them to their countries for appropriate judicial action.

OK, buddy. Where's the pod? (Think Progress)
