The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 10/24/08

Ashley Todd
A lot of trouble for nothing...

-Next time remember, you can't write an 'O' backwards-
You already know the story by now, but if you don't, here's the link and the gist of it:

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Police say a campaign volunteer confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter B in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker; now she's facing charges.

At a news conference this afternoon, officials said they believe that Ashley Todd's injuries were self-inflicted.

Todd, 20, of Texas, is now facing charges for filing a false report to police.

Yeah, the B's backward, so not a lot of people took the story seriously. Well, other than Drudge, Sean Hannity, both John McCain and Sarah Palin, etc. In other words, the typical people who are either gullible chumps or hope you are.

But one of those people have gone the extra mile, really milking this thing for all it's worth (which turns out to be nuthin') -- Fox News executive vice president John Moody.

Writing a blog post at Fox's "Fox Forum," Moody wrote about it with absolute certainty. "It had to happen," he writes. "Less than two weeks before we vote for a new president, a white woman says a black man attacked her, then scarred her face, and says there was a political motive for it."

The whole thing "could become a watershed event in the 11 days before the election" and, "If Ms. Todd's allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator [Barack] Obama, not because they are racists ... but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee."

What?

I don't get it, is the fictional black man who attacked Todd actually supposed to be Barack Obama or what? Why would some crime that would -- if it hadn't turned out to be a lie -- have only the thinnest connection to Obama personally make people wonder if they knew enough about him? You don't go to the desert looking for water and you don't go to Fox News looking for sense.

Of course, McCain gets hit in the driveby bullshit spray as well. "If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator [John] McCain's quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting," Moody writes.

OK. One, McCain's pretty much done as it is -- this isn't some sort of tipping point here. Two, this has as much to do with John McCain as it does with Barack Obama. Some goofy college kid tried some sort of guerilla propaganda campaign and failed miserably. Three, is this supposed to be the first time some asshole has said or done something racist in support of McCain? Really?

Fox News, dumbassery done right. (Media Matters)

-Headline of the day-
"Palin’s Makeup Stylist Fetches Highest Salary in 2-Week Period."

Fresh off news that Republican donors footed the bill for $150,000 in some of them there big-city, fancy clothes, further revelations show that the McCain campaign gave a bundle to Amy Strozzi for makeup and styling. According to the report, Strozzi "was nominated for an Emmy award for her makeup work on the television show 'So You Think You Can Dance?'"

How much did it cost to have Strozzi plaster on the makeup like a trollop? $22,800 -- for the first two weeks of October alone. More than any other campaign staffer was paid for that period.

But doesn't the fancypants moose lady look nice? Totally worth it. Besides, Strozzi seems to be the only member of Team McCain who can actually do what they're paid to do. The rest are a bunch of total fuckups. (New York Times)
