The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 1/21/09

-Headline of the day-
"Earliest weapons-grade plutonium found in US dump."

Well, that's not good...

According to the report, "An old glass jar inside a beaten up old safe at the bottom of a waste pit may seem an unlikely place to find a pivotal piece of 20th century history. But that's just where the first batch of weapons-grade plutonium ever made has been found - abandoned at the world's oldest nuclear processing site."

The site was in Hanford, Washington, the site of a "nuclear reservation" as part of the WWII Manhattan Project. The jar contained 400 milliliters of weapons-grade plutonium. Government contractors buried "all kinds of chemical and radioactive waste indiscriminately" at the site, which has earned it the dubious title of "Dirtiest Place on Earth."

It's a good thing that Bush isn't still the president or we'd invade Washington. Clearly, they have WMD. (NewScientist.com)

-Speaking of that one former president guy...-
He sucks. A lot. It's official and on the newly revamped White House website.

On the agenda portion of the site, Bush is ripped up over his reaction to Hurricane Katrina. Citing the "broken promises made by President Bush" to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, the site tells us, "President Obama swiftly responded to Hurricane Katrina. Citing the Bush Administration's 'unconscionable ineptitude' in responding to Hurricane Katrina, then-Senator Obama introduced legislation requiring disaster planners to take into account the specific needs of low-income hurricane victims."

No word on Bush's reaction, but that could be because he has his head stuck in the railing by his stairs.

He is unconscionably inept, you know. (Politico)

-Oops!-
The Louisiana newspaper Abbeville Meridional endorsed George W. Bush for president -- twice -- and, for that, they apologize.

"We knew he never won any prizes for being smart, but we thought he had good common sense and we supported him throughout his two terms. When he invaded Iraq, we immediately knew it was ill advised and a terrible mistake. Still, we supported him in the belief we didn’t know all the facts and he did," the editorial board writes. "We continued to support him through his two terms hoping against hope that he would correct his many misjudgments and mistakes. Sadly, we were wrong on every count."

They cite Bush's "lack of truthfulness, intelligence and compassion" in their decision. "Throw in arrogance and you run the gambit of what it takes to be the worst president in history," they write.

"We deeply regret having recommended Bush to our readers and profusely apologize for our mistake in character and judgment," the piece closes.

It's a little late, but I'll take it. (AbbevilleNow.com, via reddit)
