News Roundup for 2/1/10

State of Georgia
Finding new ways to be stupid

-Headline of the day-
"Things The Religious Right Opposes."

Just this morning, I wrote that the religious right (and the wingnut right in general) are basically lunatics. Nothing bears me out more than this post from Right Wing Watch.

Turns out that the religious right are completely insane about the strangest things; like a $10 tax on marriage licenses to fund domestic violence shelters. I guess this constitutes an "undue burden on marriage," according to the Utah Eagle Forum. Imagine all those people who would get married, but can't, because they can't afford the extra sawbuck for the license. I'm doing a quick, back-of-the-envelope calculation here and the sum of such couples is looking like it's around none.

But it's a tax and it helps women, so that makes it lesbian-feminazi communism.

If you really want insane, you have to check out a move in Georgia to get kids trapped in sex trafficking into therapy, rather than the criminal justice system. "A state lawmaker and hundreds of child advocates are calling for young girls to be treated as victims and not criminalized as prostitutes," the report tells us. The religious right is against that. Because they're sick in the head.

"All we would do is be inviting into our state pedophiles and panderers looking for children," says former state Sen. Nancy Schaefer, now president of Eagle Forum of Georgia.

What would Jesus Do? Apparently lock up as a whore a minor forced into prostitution. At least, the psychotic and idiotic Jesus these morons have made up out of their hatred and sadism and mental illness. Opposition to this law is the flavor of the month for Georgian wingnuts, with the Georgia Christian Alliance, the Georgia Christian Coalition, Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition, and the Georgia Baptist Convention joining the Eagle Forum in support of criminalizing child sexual abuse victims.

I guess it's true what they say; sometimes the best arguments against Christianity are Christians themselves. (Right Wing Watch)

-It was inevitable-
In an interview with MSNBC, top McCain campaign adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin said that -- despite his spending freeze pledge -- the messes left by the Bush administration would've forced a President McCain to increase the deficit. He took some swipes at Obama's spending, but acknowledged that we "probably would still have a record deficit" under McCain.

Turns out that the bulk of the deficit is due to lost revenue from Bush's top-heavy tax cuts and the two wars. The next time some moron tells you that tax cuts increase revenues, go ahead smack them. (Huffington Post)

-Bonus HotD-
"How Palin's PAC spends its money."

OK, here's how it works. Sarah Palin writes a book. Sarah Palin's political action committee -- SarahPAC -- spends $91,000 on Sarah's books (including promotions), which it then gives to new donors to the PAC. In contrast, the PAC gave only $43,000 to GOP candidates, which is the stated purpose of her group.

So, if you gave to SarahPAC, you basically bought her book and didn't accomplish a whole lot more than that. In short, you've been conned. About $0.32 out of every dollar finds its way to a Republican candidate...

The rest seems to find its way to Sarah's pocket. (Salon)

I was wondering - is prostitution really illegal in Georgia? I was slightly surprised to learn that - yes, yes it is.

But that surprise was as nothing to my astonishment to learn that it's illegal in all 50 states and DC.

No wonder pimps are so rich.
