Poll: GOP Deficit Worries Not Shared by Voters

A new CNN poll [pdf] out Friday contains some kinda-sorta bad news for Democrats. Republicans outscore dems on the "can improve the economy question by just 3 points -- within the margin of error -- and "Shares your view of the proper size and power of the federal government" by eight points. There's more there, if you want to take a look at it.

But one thing that's not there is a bit of common wisdom -- both Republicans and the media keep saying it -- that people are extremely worried about the deficit. Turns out, we aren't.

Sure, it's concern #2 after the economy, but at 13%, I think we can be pretty sure the deficit isn't the first thing people think about when they're asked what worries them. Yet the media is repeating the Republican line -- without any evidence -- that everyone's freaked out over the deficit.

The next time someone tells you that the deficit is the fashionable panic these days, ask them to prove it.
