Stories to Watch: 3/19/14

Having abandoned the "Obamacare horror story" angle after real Obamacare horror stories turned out to be rarer than hens teeth, the right has a new "OH GOD OBAMACARE'S A TRAINWRECK!" narrative: that health insurance execs are saying that healthcare premiums are definitely going to double sometime soon -- because of reasons. The problem here is that this whole story comes from unnamed sources --and it's just the the one story -- meaning no one who's saying that healthcare costs are about to skyrocket is willing to go on the record as saying that healthcare costs are about to skyrocket. So that pungent stench you're detecting right now? Yeah, that's pure, uncut bullshit.

Putin says he's worried about Russian speakers in Estonia now. At this point, I think he's just trolling everyone. It's either than or the guy has completely lost it.

It may be a matter of historical fact that the only people who talked more about Nazis than Republicans were the Nazis themselves. And it's all ridiculous because it's just offensively hyperbolic bellyaching. People who are real victims of the Nazis are dead. Republican just get their asses kicked in policy fights and then use Nazi analogies to whine about it. There's a difference. Worse, the right loves to use Nazi analogies to defend their own intolerance; i.e., "You just hate people who hate gay/minorities/immigrants/etc. So who's the bigot now? Huh? Huh?" Imagine the extent of my sympathy. It reaches nearly microscopic depths.

I'm not sure longtime rightwing nutjob Phyllis Schlafly understands how trademark works.

Chris Christie is using state police to intimidate protesters at New Jersey townhall events. That's really not the best way to move beyond a scandal involving the abuse of government power.

Nate Silver's relaunched Fivethirtyeight blog gets off to a seriously terrible start with some journalistic malpractice on climate change.

Finally, Bobbie Jindal is a dishonest clown. Not that you didn't already know that. It's just that you have to come right out and say these things bluntly from time to time or staring into the Republican abyss will devour your soul.
