Stories to Watch: 3/3/14

It's starting to look like Republicans are willing to pay any price to make President Obama look bad -- including advocating a level of aggression toward Russia that could easily lead to war. That's right, war. With Russia. Over Ukraine. These people are insane. Lindsey Graham -- always the font of astoundingly bad foreign policy notions -- thinks it would be the smartest thing ever to "restart missile defense systems in the Czech Republic." It'd be bad for us, bad for Czech, and it would drive Putin out of Crimea how?

My opinion of former Tea Party Rep. Allen West hits a new low. In a homophobic blog post, West complained that our "gay military" was holding a fundraiser for LGBT troops in Okinawa while Putin was invading Russia. Not sure what his point here is -- it's not like the troops decide what they do in response to Russia. But that's not the worst part. Asked about the post by Buzzfeed, West passed the buck to his website's editor. Gutless.

The BBC takes a look at the Ukraine crisis from the Russian POV. The result is a very good backgrounder.

Tucker Carlson and Alex Jones reach new levels of stupidity by agreeing that the Democratic Party has become the new Ku Klux Klan, only "with minorities." WTF does that even mean?

President Obama will call for an expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit and the child tax credit in his budget. This is running to the GOP's right on taxes for working families, while engaging the left with poverty alleviation efforts and basic Keynesian economic stimulus. He can't get a minimum wage increase in as a budget item, so this is the next best thing.

Bitcoin ain't money. So sayeth billionaire investor Warren Buffett.

Limbaugh cranks the racism up to eleven, by basically claiming that 12 Years a Slave only won the Oscar because of Affirmative Action.

Finally, Rep. Steve King said something stupid again today. In this episode, the Iowa moron argues that if laws protect LGBT people from discrimination, then people will just pretend to be gay so they can sue businesses. Someone want to tell Steve that it's illegal to discriminate on the basis of religion -- and that you can actually pretend to be religious? Oddly, this has not led to the giant frivolous lawsuit crisis Steve seems to believe it would. Go figure.
