AIG may sue because bailout wasn’t a cushy enough deal. Sen. Warren is displeased
Fresh from paying back a $182 billion bailout, the American International Group has been running a nationwide advertising campaign with the tagline “Thank you America.”
Behind the scenes, the restored insurance company is weighing whether to tell the government agencies that rescued it during the financial crisis: thanks, but you cheated our shareholders.
The board of A.I.G. will meet on Wednesday to consider joining a $25 billion shareholder lawsuit against the government, court records show. The lawsuit does not argue that government help was not needed. It contends that the onerous nature of the rescue — the taking of what became a 92 percent stake in the company, the deal’s high interest rates and the funneling of billions to the insurer’s Wall Street clients — deprived shareholders of tens of billions of dollars and violated the Fifth Amendment, which prohibits the taking of private property for “public use, without just compensation.”
Maurice R. Greenberg, A.I.G.’s former chief executive, who remains a major investor in the company, filed the lawsuit in 2011 on behalf of fellow shareholders. He has since urged A.I.G. to join the case, a move that could nudge the government into settlement talks.
So basically, the saved drowning victim is suing the lifeguard because the fabric on the lifepreserver gave him a rash. Boo freakin’ hoo, you whiny little dick. No one made you accept the deal.
Newly-minted Senator Elizabeth Warren released a statement:
Beginning in 2008, the federal government poured billions of dollars into AIG to save it from bankruptcy. AIG’s reckless bets nearly crashed our entire economy. Taxpayers across this country saved AIG from ruin, and it would be outrageous for this company to turn around and sue the federal government because they think the deal wasn’t generous enough. Even today, the government provides an ongoing, stealth bailout, propping up AIG with special tax breaks — tax breaks that Congress should stop. AIG should thank American taxpayers for their help, not bite the hand that fed them for helping them out in a crisis.
In other words, if AIG thinks they got too little, they’re delusional. They’re got too much and are still getting too much. Corporate welfare beggars can’t be choosers.

New poll has Elizabeth Warren up 6 in Massachusetts
“This may be not just due to her speech, but the overall enthusiasm Democrats have had coming out of their convention,” says Tim Vercellotti, professor of political science and director of the Polling Institute at Western New England University. “The data shows that Democrats are more fired up right now than independents or Republicans.”

One thing that's fun to watch in the wingnut blogosphere is the sight of bloggers buying into their own spin. It's kind of easy for them to do, since they only seem to read each other and stuff they find on Fox News, so they really have no idea what the hell's going on outside their little echo chamber.
And so it was with a trumped up "scandal" about Elizabeth Warren claiming Cherokee ancestry. Seems that the wingnut blogosphere measures ethnicity differently than the Cherokees do (Liz is as Cherokee as the leader of the nation) and they'd worked themselves up into a tizzy over it. Warren was doomed, they said, DOOMED!
Turns out that, as earth-shattering a revelation as the nutjobs thought this was, no one else cares. A new Suffolk University poll finds that 69% don't think the half-baked "scandal's" even a story and only 28% believe Warren lied about being a native American.
Meanwhile, Warren's surging ahead in the poll, closing a nine-point gap in February to a statistical tie today.
Yeah, wingnut blogosphere, that sure was a damaging little scandal you cooked up. Maybe -- if you try real hard -- you can convince yourself it's working. (Politico)

Embattled Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker pledged to create a quarter of a million jobs -- a number he pulled pretty much out of his butt -- when he was elected. So how's that going? Not well.
Also on the Wisconsin recall front; state Senate leader Scott Fitzgerald says his recall opponent, Lori Compas, couldn't possibly be organizing her campaign herself -- because she's a lady.
Florida governor Rick Scott's administration is starting to look a little corrupt.
Sunday political talk shows suck. They just do. I think they always have.
Elizabeth Warren makes an excellent point: banking should not be exciting, it should be boring.
Was there anyone who seriously believed that Romney's time with Bain wouldn't be brought up by Team Obama?

Stories to Watch: 3/24/12
I'll be out tomorrow. I'm heading up to a small plot of land my mother has up north, to clean up after a tornado that hit last year (no one was there at the time). The big stuff has all been cleared out by lumberjacks or something, so basically we're going to pick up scattered trash. So updates will probably be few to none. Now here's the news...

Unless a Romney staffer compares their candidate to a dry erase board, Healthcare Reform and the Affordable Care Act will be the issue next week. Expect plenty of crazy talk from the right.

Stories to Watch: 3/4/12
All that wet snow from yesterday is now ice. What a mess. I threw salt on my sidewalk and I could hear it crackle. Now here's the news...
Missed in all the contraception/Limbaugh/Fluke hullabaloo during the past few days; Rick Santorum's really having to do damage control for saying that urging Americans to seek higher education makes Barack Obama a "snob."
Although, on that issue of contraception, Rick doesn't seem to have learned a damned thing from the events of this past week.
In a sign that Santorum has been overplaying social issues, Ohio -- where he held a clear lead -- is now polling as a tie. The wise thing to do would be to compete with Romney on economic issues, but that's not why Rick ran in the first place. He ran to lecture America on gays and abortion and all that other culture warrior stuff. He's completely unprepared to do anything else.
And it's not just Santorum, the entire GOP has been backing social losers since the Komen/Planned Parenthood fiasco.
A new poll shows Scott Brown leading Elizabeth Warren by a solid, but not insurmountable, eight points. It was hard to tell where the race stood, because earlier polling had glaring flaws. The problem with facing incumbents is more than name recognition and the fundraising advantage (although, in this race, Warren holds the cash edge); many people ask themselves, "Does this guy deserve to be fired?" not, "Who's the better candidate?" Maybe Warren needs to make things less personal and talk about what happens if the Republicans take the senate. Or more personal and talk about Brown as the cosponsor of the wildly unpopular Blunt amendment.
Finally, voter supression doesn't get much more blatant than this.

Cleared up some snow earlier today. It was wet, heavy stuff -- the kind that makes great snowmen but sucks to shovel. I should sleep well tonight. I try to think of it as good cardio. Now here's the news...
A nice catch by one of my web buddies Lordrag: Jeb Bush says he "used to be a conservative."
Regular fella Mitt Romney brags that he owns four cars.
Rick Santorum's doing better with female voters than most would've predicted. The most likely explanation; these ladies don't know Rick very well.
Nate Silver says that Romney will probably win Michigan.
Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren both write op-eds in the Boston Globe. The subject is contraception coverage and Brown takes the losing argument. Even severely conservative and severely Catholic Pat Buchanan thinks the GOP is playing a losing hand.
Consumer confidence continues to rise, so gas prices aren't having that much of an effect so far.
Finally, the Dutch are none too happy with Rick Santorum. People who are running for president should probably avoiding sparking international incidents.

Hey, remember the guy the John McCain's "build the danged fence" ad? He seems to be guilty of all different kinds of hypocrisy. Not to mention at least one actual crime. According to the report, "Rising Republican star and well-known border hawk Sheriff Paul Babeu, who’s now running for Congress in Arizona, was hit Friday night with bombshell accusations from a Mexican immigrant who said he dated the sheriff for years and was threatened with deportation if he ever told anyone about their romance."
Santorum's newly released tax records show that, despite being a multi-millionaire, he gives almost nothing to charity.
GOP panic over their presidential field deepens.
This goes a long way toward explaining the GOP's problem here; "There is no other way to put this without resorting to demographic bluntness: the small fraction of Americans who are trying to pick the Republican nominee are old, white, uniformly Christian and unrepresentative of the nation at large."
How far outside the mainstream is the GOP voter? Their frontrunner is getting wild applause for praising income inequality.

And why should they? Think about it. All the polling before this either had them pretty much tied or Warren leading. Now, all of a sudden, Brown opens up a big lead. And this is because...?
Yeah, it's because nothing. Nothing has changed. No one has switched strategies, no one's launched a big ad campaign or switched to a new message. No one got involved in a big scandal or saved a bunch of orphans from a burning building. The numbers lack any underlying explanation -- which is why even GOP insiders think they're inaccurate.

Purported details of one of the incidents that got Herman Cain in hot water are published by -- of all places -- Pajamas Media. If true, it's really, really, really, really, really, really bad.
In related news, it looks like Team Cain has run out of people to blame.
A 'bagger calls Elizabeth Warren a "socialist whore" at an appearance before campaign volunteers, because they're classy like that. She handled it with grace. Oh, and he was a birther, too. What joys these people are.
Nate Silver gives Obama a 50/50 at reelection. Not a big fan of those odds. Still, it's a long way to go to the election.
Still wondering what the Occupy movement is about? Try this. Not good enough? How about this?

Mitt Romney avoids offering an opinion of the repeal of Ohio's union-busting law -- while visiting a phone bank making calls on behalf of the law. Finger in the wind.
DNC chair Rep. Debbie Wassserman Schultz on Rick Perry's tax plan: "My reaction to Rick Perry's new/old plan is that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Robbing from the poor to give to the rich hasn't been working so far, but this time for sure!
Elizabeth Warren v. Scott Brown just became a proxy war for Occupy Wall Street v. Wall Street. Guess who's on whose side?
The Congressional Budget Office confirms that the rich have been making plenty of money.
Rick Santorum is busy confirming everyone's preconception of him as a ridiculous bigot and national embarrassment.

A Ron Paul supporter takes out a full page ad asking for a "stripper, escort, or just a 'young hottie'" who's "ever had sex with Rick Perry" to contact the "Committee Against Sexual Hypocrisy (CASH)." Like many Ron Paul supporters, this one -- Robert Morrow, who seems to make up the entirety of his "committee" -- is quite literally insane.
The Obama administration calls for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down.
Christine O'Donnell -- who is still not a witch -- walks off the set of Pier's Morgan Tonight because of, according to O'Donnell, "border-line creepy" questions about sex. CNN, on the other hand, reports that she walked off "when asked about her views on sexual abstinence and gay marriage." Unfortunately for O'Donnell, CNN has the video. Do Tea Party types just not understand the concept of "recording?" They get caught in these kind of lies all the time.
Michele Bachmann pass herself of as "Dr. Bachmann" about ten years ago -- a title she had no claim to.
Economically, we're heading straight for a cliff, by embracing austerity, drastic spending cuts, and other examples of boneheaded prioritizing that tries to reverse the law of supply and demand. The problem is, everyone knows it, but no one in Washington will admit it.
Rick Perry doesn't know jack about climate change. And that's the positive spin. A more negative view would be that he's a bad liar.
The next big fight in Wisconsin; retiring Sen. Herb Kohl's seat which, at the moment, could go either way.
Once famous for loving cheeseburgers, former president Bill Clinton goes vegan. Sounds like it was doctor's orders.
Finally, Elizabeth Warren forms an exploratory committee in preparation of a run against Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts.

Stories to Watch: 7/18/11
Geez is it hot. And I'm going to grill. Because I'm stupid, I guess. I'm planning on standing out there by a fire in this heat. You could melt lead in the shade. Yeah, I'm crazy -- but it's gonna be so good. Add "guys from Wisconsin" to Noel Coward's "Mad dogs and Englishmen" quote. Now here's the news...
The whistleblower who helped get the phone-hacking scandal ball rolling, former News of the World entertainment reporter Sean Hoare, was found dead in his home today. He had a history of alcohol and drug abuse and police say the death is "not suspicious," but that won't stop a lot of people from thinking it sounds pretty suspicious to them.
Rupert Murdoch and the folks at the very top of News Corp. seemed to think they could manage this scandal -- right up to the point that it all got away from them.
With a CBS poll showing that the GOP has lost the debt limit debate, the rightwing blogosphere does what it always does when confronted with facts it doesn't like -- attack the research. As they say on Mythbusters: "I reject your reality and substitute my own."
President Obama says he'd veto the insane plan for raising the debt ceiling that House Republicans are cooking up. Of course, this is the worst thing ever -- never mind that it would never even get to the floor of the Senate anyway.
Out as a potential head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Elizabeth Warren may take a shot at getting Ted Kennedy's seat back from Scott Brown.
Rep. Louie Gohmert verifies that he's a freakin' moron.
As does Indiana Republican Rep. Todd Rokita.
What the hell, throw everyone in the gay conservative group GOProud on the moron train as well.
Finally, Harry Potter wants to lead American children to Hell. So you want to watch out for that.

Stories to Watch: 7/16/11
It's going to get hot up here. Well, that is, hot for up here. We're talking mid to high 90s. We're not used to this stuff. We'll puff up like the pasty white Pillsbury Doughboys most of us are. So get used to hearing us complain a lot about that. Now here's the news...
More details emerge about Team Obama's reelection fundraising. If Republicans don't read that and worry, they should.
Speaking of Obama, he threw Elizabeth Warren under the bus last night. No word on who will be nominated in her place to lead a consumer protection bureau. Of course, anyone who's not a rabid teabagger won't have any easier time being confirmed, so it's hard to see the point in dropping Warren.
House GOP leadership turn to Rep. Paul Ryan to talk some sense into freshman on the debt limit. Probably not the worst idea ever.
Wow. The race to recall Wisconsin Democratic state Senator Dave Hansen just got really, really weird. The Republican running against him, David VanderLeest, has to deny smoking crack and a history of domestic abuse. The problem is, there's a paper trail. Florida Gov. Rick Scott may be the most unpopular governor in the nation. It's easy to see why.
Painted into a corner by House Republican's worship of Paul Ryan's Medicare scheme, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell finds some hostages to shoot -- and it's pretty much everybody.
Frankly, I wouldn't want to touch it either. Still, using an autopen to sign the extension of the PATRIOT Act into law doesn't really spare you the responsibility, President Obama. It's an awful dog of a law, it's everything you originally said you were against, and that's your name at the bottom.
I don't care what anyone else says, Charles Krauthammer is an idiot.

Everyone on the right is saying that Obama threw Israel "under the bus" with his call for a return to 1967 borders. The Anti-Defamation Leagues Abe Foxman disagrees -- but that's probably because he's so antisemitic.
Are you a bright teen who thinks it would be fun to debate Michele Bachmann on the subject of the Constitution? Then get ready for threats of rape and violence. Bachmann is a Tea Party hero and apparently the 'baggers have decided that calling 16 year-old Amy Myers a "whore" and threatening to publish her home address so nuts can come have their way with her is what the founders had envisioned.
Fox big Roger Ailes doesn't like that Chris Matthews said Sarah Palin is "pathetic." Luckily, there's no reason for anyone at MSNBC to give a fuck what Roger Ailes thinks.
