Christie desperate, flailing, golden brown and crispy

Slice of toast with googly eyes
Politico: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, after a low-key initial response to Friday’s explosive allegations about his involvement in a bridge-closing scandal, mounted an aggressive defense late Saturday afternoon, attacking The New York Times and a former political ally in an email to friends and allies obtained by POLITICO.

“Bottom line — David Wildstein will do and say anything to save David Wildstein,” the email from the governor’s office says, referring to the former appointee who reignited the controversy.

A letter from Wildstein’s lawyer, Alan L. Zegas of Chatham, N.J., asserted Friday that “evidence exists … tying Mr. Christie to having knowledge of the lane closures, during the period when the lanes were closed, contrary to what the Governor stated publicly in a two-hour press conference.”

The subject line of the 700-word email from the governor’s office is: “5 Things You Should Know About The Bombshell That’s Not A Bombshell.” It offers a harshly negative portrayal of Wildstein’s character and judgment.
The problem here is that the “5 things you should know” (did Christie get Buzzfeed to write that email, BTW?) is that they’re 5 very stupid and irrelevant things. The groundbreaking revelations are that Wildstein sued the school board when he was a student, that he was “publicly accused by his high school social studies teacher of deceptive behavior,” that he was once a not very popular or particularly good mayor, that he was once a blogger (an “anonymous” blogger, so I guess that’s scary), and that he had a “strange habit” of registering websites under other people’s names — a common enough practice in modern politics. You try to snatch up all the memorable URLs, leaving your opponent with choices like www.2014IsForCandidatesNameToWinBig.com.

He may or may not have done something questionable in high school? Really? That’s not even an actual accusation, it’s the illusion of an accusation.

"One person said we should see the release of this email as a message to funders," writes Josh Marshall. “If so, the message seems to be ‘I’m desperate and losing my mind.’”

But the message everyone else should take away from this is “I got nuthin’.” Christie is responding to very serious charges by a until-very-recently top Team Christie player — and the only thing he can manage are unserious charges about crap from high school. If the governor had anything that would stick — anything at all — he’d throw it. Instead, we get the political equivalent of “he smells and his mom dresses him funny.”

At this point, there’s pretty much no one who will argue that Chris Christie is not completely done for as a 2016 candidate — or possibly even as a governor. At least, no one with the exception of Rudy Giuliani, who for some unfathomable reason seems absolutely committed to hitching his wagon to Chris Christie’s star — even as that star sinks under the horizon.

Christie is finished. If he wasn’t, he’d have some sort of defense, instead of this ridiculous high school grievance smokescreen.

Christie’s latest spin actually makes his office look even worse

TPM - Christie's Office Blasts 'Wild-Eyed Conspiracy' Theories In Bridge Scandal
Talking Points Memo: New Jersey Gov. Christie’s (R) office apparently thinks “left-wing blogs” are to blame for the competing theories about who and what was behind the decision to close lanes on the George Washington Bridge in September.

In a short statement to CNN on Tuesday, Christie spokesman Colin Reed blasted the theories, including those that posit the closures, which tied up traffic for days in Fort Lee, N.J., were to get revenge on rivals or possibly linked to a local real estate development.

"We’re not commenting on every wild-eyed conspiracy theory that’s originating on left-wing blogs," Reed told the cable news network.
OK, so if there was no conspiracy to punish anyone politically and there was no traffic study, then what’s left is that the lanes were shut down because someone in your office woke up one day, decided to be a total dick for no reason, and got a whole bunch of people in your administration to help them do it.

If that’s your story, this is one leftwing blog that’s more than willing to help you get the message out. So listen up everyone: there’s no conspiracy here. The governor’s office is just filled with complete assholes who fuck citizens over for no reason at all.

You can thank me later, Gov. Christie.

Christie’s problem: he actually is a bully. It’s his political brand

Ezra Klein - Chris Christie's problem is that he's really, truly a bully
Not to belabor the point I’ve been belaboring, but — despite his statement to the contrary — Chris Christie is a bully. Not only is he a bully, but he’s a bully who had previously bragged about being a bully by posting videos to Youtube of him being a dick to people.
Ezra Klein: Christie inhabits a rare space in American politics: He’s a bully. He’s followed around by an aide with a camcorder watching for moments in which Christie, mustering the might and prestige of his office, annihilates some citizen who dares question him.

Almost everywhere Christie goes, he is filmed by an aide whose job is to capture these “moments,” as the governor’s staff has come to call them. When one occurs, Christie’s press shop splices the video and uploads it to YouTube; from there, conservatives throughout the country share Christie clips the way tween girls circulate Justin Bieber videos. “The YouTube stuff is golden,” says Rich Lowry, the editor of National Review. “I can’t tell you how many people forward them to me.” One video on Christie’s YouTube channel — a drubbing he delivered to another aggrieved public-school teacher at a town hall in September — has racked up over 750,000 views.

Now in Moorestown, Christie was hoping to create another such moment. After some introductory remarks, he opened the floor to questions. “For those of you who have seen some of my appearances on YouTube,” he cautioned, peeling off his suit jacket as he spoke, “this is when it normally happens.”
It’s not an accident that Christie emerged in a period when the Republican Party is out of power. His videos make them feel powerful at a moment when they’re weak.
And of course, there’s my long-standing hypothesis that many conservatives are conservatives because they think it gives them license to be assholes. If you’re of a dickish nature, what better party to join than the one that lets you bully gays, feminists, unwed mothers, minority voters, non-Christians (Muslims especially), environmentalists, scientists, and people who react badly to having guns jammed in their faces? Chris Christie is a bully because the Republican base is made up of bullies. Bullies pass his videos around like kids with baseball cards. It’s his brand.

So what does Christie have going for him now that he’s ditched his “hero to assholes everywhere” brand? Not a lot, really. A competent handling of natural disaster and that’s about it. I’m not sure Christie knows how to do politics without belittling reporters and shaking his finger in teachers’ faces. He’s basically just a loudmouth with a tough guy act — only now without the act.

He may very well be done as a national figure. At least, I hope so. His brand of politics has no place in a democracy.

Chris Christie’s bridge scandal just got real

NewJersey.com: Private messages between Governor’s Christie’s deputy chief of staff and two of his top executives at the Port Authority reveal a vindictive effort to create “traffic problems in Fort Lee” by shutting lanes to the George Washington Bridge and apparent pleasure at the resulting gridlock.

The messages are replete with references and insults to Fort Lee’s mayor, who had failed to endorse Christie for re-election and they chronicle how local officials tried to reach the Port Authority in a vain effort to eliminate the paralyzing gridlock that overwhelmed his town of 35,000, which sits in the shadow of the bridge, the world’s busiest.

The documents obtained by The Record raise serious doubts about months of claims by the Christie administration that the September closures of local access lanes to the George Washington Bridge were part of a traffic study initiated solely by the Port Authority. Instead, they show that one of the governor’s top aides was deeply involved in the decision to choke off the borough’s access to the bridge, and they provide the strongest indication yet that it was part of a politically-motivated vendetta—a notion that Christie has publicly denied.
"Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee," one senior Christie staffer wrote another. Another said they felt sorry for the kids trapped in traffic jams on their way to school, the response was, "They are the children of Buono voters" — referencing Christie’s Democratic opponent in the gubernatorial race.

This makes the scandal harder for Christie to ignore and reinforces his image as a bully. Just coming off a win in New Jersey, he may get a pass from voters there. But national voters may not let it slide, putting his presidential aspirations in question.

This is abuse of power, pure and simple. The sheer pettiness of it all just makes everything worse. Christie would get nothing out of creating traffic headaches for the residents of Fort Lee, other than revenge on the one mayor who refused to kiss his ring. it serves no other purpose.

RIP Sen. Frank Lautenberg

Sen. Lautenberg
CBS News: Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., the last World War II veteran serving in the Senate, died due to complications from viral pneumonia at 4:02 a.m. Monday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell, his office announced. He was 89 years old.

The Democrat had health problems in recent years and had missed several Senate votes in the first months of the year. He had the flu and missed the Senate’s Jan. 1 vote to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff of rising taxes and falling government spending, then missed several votes two months later because of leg pain.

A chest cold kept him from attending a May 29 tribute in New York honoring him for his contributions to the Jewish community and Israel.

He had been diagnosed in February 2010 with B-cell lymphoma of the stomach and underwent chemotherapy treatments until he was declared in June 2010 to be free of cancer. He worked between the treatments. The diagnosis came just days after the death of West Virginia’s Robert Byrd made Lautenberg the oldest member of the Senate.

Before going to Washington, he was a successful businessman who co-founded the firm Automatic Data Processing.

Lautenberg is survived by his wife, Bonnie Englebardt Lautenberg; six children and their spouses and 13 grandchildren.
Lautenberg was not seeking reelection and his term would’ve ended this cycle. Republican Gov. Chris Christie will appoint a temporary replacement until a special election can be held. This could happen as early as November. Lautenberg was an advocate of stricter gun regulations, an advocate for “Amtrak and other transportation causes, as well as environmental, health care and veterans’ issues.”

News Roundup for 6/12/12

Kite
Commie death from above

-Headline of the Day-
"Koch-Fueled Americans For Prosperity Plans Protest Against ‘Extremist’ Kids Flying Kites In Support Of Wind."

Commies will be flying kites and the Koch brother's front group Americans for Prosperity will be there! Because liberty.

See, the pinkos will be gathering at Asbury Park and Ocean City, New Jersey this Friday to use kites to prove that this so-called "wind" actually exists. According to AFP, "You heard that right! Friday is “Global Wind Day” and environmental extremists throughout New Jersey will be celebrating by flying kites at beaches along the Jersey Shore and calling for more and more of our tax dollars to be used to subsidize their crazy offshore wind pipe dreams!

"AFP will be going toe to toe with the environmental extremists to combat their radical agenda and tell the truth about the costs of offshore wind."

Utilizing free energy that's flying around us all the time? EXTREMISM!! If it doesn't belch smoke, the Founding Fathers would've hated it. Everyone knows that.

The hippies are spinning this another way, of course. "We’ll be gathering at a beach near you for a kite-flying rally and celebration of NJ’s offshore wind potential. Bring your family, friends and kites," says the Sierra Club. It's a good thing that this is just spin or "going toe-to-toe" with kids flying kites would seem a tad bit dickish and bullying.

But someone needs to stand up to these nuts who insist that wind exists. After all, everyone knows that only communists love kites. (ThinkProgress)

Stories to Watch: 2/17/12

Friday. Too lazy to say anything else about it. Now here's the news...

As expected, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie vetoes a marriage equality bill.

A judge denies Wisconsin Gov. Walker's request that the recall be delayed.

The GOP may find their contraception stance pretty expensive come election day.

To provide cover for that stance, at least one Republican resorts to just making stuff up.

It pays to remember that Pat Buchanan is just awful.

About that "failed stimulus."

It's starting to look like Romney's really in trouble and top GOPers are panicking.

Gingrich's Sugar Daddy isn't abandoning him quite yet. I'm not really all that surprised. No one expected Gingrich to win -- not even Sheldon Adelson. The billionaire 's contributions have been message money, not candidate money. He wants GOP candidates to talk about the things Newt Gingrich talks about. I mean, come one, the guy's a freakin' casino magnate -- he knows a losing bet when he sees one.

Finally, how insane is Rick Santorum? If he was telling the truth in 2008, he believes that Satan is using protestant churches to destroy America. That crazy enough for you?

News Roundup for 10/4/11

Christie
"Not gonna happen"

-Headline of the Day-
"Gov. Chris Christie will not run for president."

After media-fueled speculation that Chris Christie may run for president started a rumor that Chris Christie would run for president, Christie himself shot that rumor down today.

"Now is not the time..." the Governor of New Jersey said in a press conference. "New Jersey, whether you like it or not, you're stuck with me." The news comes as Christie-mania hits a fever-pitch, with at least one poll showing that Republican voters didn't care whether he jumped in or not. I'm sure the disappointment will be just as impalpable as the excitement was.

Wait for pundits to say this is the latest sign that Christie is still weighing his options. At least, until they get around to speculating as to whether Mike Huckabee might run. (NJ.com)

Stories to Watch: 10/1/11

Super-short one today. I was using Firefox's Beta 7 and that switched to Beta 8 recently. Beta 8 is awful, on my machine at least. Just terrible. So I'm switching back to FF 7 and out of beta for the time being. That's today's 'puter project. Now here's the news...

President Obama uses his weekly address to push congress to "get its act together and pass this jobs bill so I can sign it into law." Clearly, he's planning on the Truman strategy of running against a do-nothing congress.

In response, the GOP blames regulations for unemployment. Like the failed tax breaks, the argument here seems to be that if you do this one thing for businesses, they'll go out and hire a bunch of people they don't actually need. Supply and demand continues to be a completely foreign concept to the Republican Party, who seem to believe that the economy is struggling because rich people are sad.

Ezra Klein takes on the recent pundit-fad of saying that Chris Christie is too fat to be president. Good for him. I'll take things a bit further by saying that the fad lets Christie wear the conservatives' favorite crown -- that of the victim. As a result, we're all arguing about shit that doesn't matter and ignoring the fact that Chris Christie is just awful. This actually works to the governor's advantage. The more time the press squabbles over bullshit, the less real coverage Christie's policies get. Pundits stop it. Just stop.

Finally, President Obama pulls down more that $55 million in the third quarter.

Stories to Watch: 8/25/11

Making lasagna in a crockpot. You'd be amazed at how well this works. Now here's the news...

Hey remember that case where one Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice was accused of choking another? Yeah, a special prosecutor says there won't be any charges filed against anyone. Both David Prosser and Ann Walsh Bradley are in the clear. From what I've been reading, it seems that Sauk County district attorney Patricia Barrett (a Republican, BTW, but so far there's no reason to doubt her) talked to all the witnesses and couldn't really get anything sorted out -- something you'd probably expect when the only witnesses were the state's top lawyers. Neither side is backing away from their story and the prosecutor says that details of the investigation will be released, so we'll see where it goes from there. Still, keep in mind that there aren't any charges for anyone -- meaning Bradley isn't being accused of filing a false report. In other words, when Bradley said she believed she was being choked, the prosecutor doesn't believe she was lying. At this point, the case seems destined to remain unresolved.

Eric Cantor is finding new hostages to take left and right.

John Huntsman continues to try to flank the rest of the GOP field on their left.

A new Pew poll finds voters unhappy with pretty much everyone.

Are we headed for a second market crash?

Hurricane Irene could be pretty dangerous. Stay safe, people.

Finally; that didn't take long. The usual nuts say the east coast quake was a sign from God.

Stories to Watch: 2/14/11

Freakin' heatwave up here. The snow is just melting like crazy, as temperatures hit the forty-degree neighborhood. This may sound good, but it's not. The streets and sidewalks are soaked, while it gets down to eighteen at night. This means ice everywhere. A real mess -- and a dangerous one at that. Now here's the news...

In an attempt to appease Republicans, President Obama offers an awful budget proposal. Of course, Republicans reject is as the worst thing ever -- before they could possibly even have read it. How many times does something like this have to happen before someone at the White House gets the obvious message -- the GOP will always refuse to be satisfied with the things they demand? Go ahead and do whatever the fuck you want, because -- even if you try to meet them halfway -- Republicans are going to whine just as loudly no matter what,

Speaking of Republicans whining: Fox News is appalled that Ron Paul libertarians weren't grovelingly respectful of Cheney and Rumsfeld.

The McCain Virus spreads to Iran and Yemen.

Greg Sargent uncovers a closet commie -- GOP Rep. Leonard Lance of New Jersey.

Andy Breitbart has trouble.

Jeff Sessions is a clown.

Finally, a breakdown of what the Obama budget would mean, agency by agency.
