Republican gun raffle offensive at every level

TPM - County GOP Auctions Rifle In MLK's Honor
Josh Marshall: The geniuses who run the Multnomah County Republican Party in Multnomah County, Oregon are honoring Martin Luther King Jr and Abraham Lincoln by raffling off a rifle in their honor.

From the MCP website

Portland, OR January 13, 2014: Multnomah Country Republicans recognize the incredible time of year we are in. In successive months to start the year, we celebrate the legacy of two great Republicans who demonstrated leadership and courage that all of us still lean on today: Martin Luther King, Jr and Abraham Lincoln. In celebrating these two men, and the denial of the rights they fought so hard against, the Multnomah County Republican Party announces that we have started our third raffle for an AR-15 rifle (or handgun of the winner’s choice). The drawing will be held at our Lincoln Day Dinner on February 15th, 2014. Tickets are once again $10 apiece, or 12 for $100, and there is a hard cap of 500 tickets in the raffle.
Not only are they raffling off guns “in honor of” people murdered by guns, but they’re returning to the old “MLK was Republican” lie — after a year of especially nasty Republican racism. The party — who argued that Trayvon Martin got what he had coming to him, who said that Mike Bloomberg’s stop-and-frisk racial profiling policy was the smartest thing ever, who defended Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson after he said African-Americans had nothing to complain about in the lynching south — does not get to say they’re the inheritors to Martin Luther King jr’s legacy.

And who remembers what MLK was doing the day he was murdered by a Second Amendment Hero using his God-given liberty to protect America from the tyranny of desegregation? That’s right, he was in Memphis supporting the right of collective bargaining for sanitation workers — a right the GOP is currently stripping away from workers in state after state after state.

The only way this could be more offensive is if they took the guns they’re raffling and set up a shooting range where you take shots at an MLK effigy for prizes. The Republican Party in no way represents Martin Luther King’s work — on any level. And anyone who pretends otherwise should prepare themselves for the justifiable anger of those who know better.

Stories to Watch: 7/24/11

Having pancakes for dinner -- again. It's been too hot to use the oven, so I'm stuck with two choices; find some way to use sourdough starter when I feed it or throw a cup of the stuff down the drain. Waste not, want not, so bring on the sourdough pancake brinner. Now here's the news...

Apparently, Boehner and Obama are back at the negotiating table. It's not exactly good news, however, since ABC News reports that any deal would likely "face strong opposition for House Republicans opposed to increasing taxes and Democrats opposes to entitlement cuts."

ThinkProgress looks at the way the right jumped on the "IT'S MUSLIMS!" train in the Norwegian terrorist attacks. Not surprisingly, they all look even stupider than normal. Breitbart's idiocy shines out especially brightly for me.

Things get worse for possibly unstable Oregon Democratic Rep. David Wu, with allegations of sexual assault.

It's Wedding Day in New York. Congratulations.

Norwegian police are investigating a possible second gunman in the terrorist attack.

Is America in danger of a Norway-type attack? We've got the same kind of nuts, so judge for yourself -- Exhibit A.

Finally, RedState's and CNN's Erick Erickson declares Jews to be extremely likely to become terrorists. It wasn't the argument he was trying to make, but Erick-Erick's a ridiculous boob and his logic is always flawed, so you wind up with collateral damage. Seriously, this guy is just awful at spin.

Griper Blade: Hillary's Math Problem

The candidate stood in front of a backdrop of smiling supporters, as candidates always do. One supporter waved a sign that read "COUNT EVERY VOTE," while Hillary Clinton advanced an argument that doesn't count every vote. "I believe that with your help we will send a message to this country because right now more people have voted for me than have voted for my opponent,” Clinton said. “More people have voted for me than for anybody ever running for president before."

Hillary Clinton and her surrogates have been arguing that she's won the popular vote. But the equation it takes to reach sum takes a detour through BS land. Clinton is including Michigan, where Barack Obama wasn't on the ballot, and discounting caucus states that haven't officially released their numbers. So, if you count the elections that don't count and discount a few that do, Hillary Clinton has a whopping 26,000 vote lead. With 33 million votes cast, that's less than 0.0008% -- a figure known among math wizards as "nuthin'."

ABC News' Jake Tapper takes on Clinton popular vote argument and concludes it's mathematically challenged. "One problem with these claims," Tapper writes, "they don't appear to be true."...
