The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 7/24/07

Creative parking alternatives for today's asshole on the go

-It's an owtraige!-
Mitt Romney gets his picture taken with an idiot and her sign in S. Carolina.

The sign, which reads, "NO TO OBAMA OSAMA AND CHELSEA'S MOMA," is such a hoot that Mitt has to hold it up so everyone can get a snapshot of it.

Golly, them conservatives and their comparisons of Democrats to terrorists. What a knee slapper. Although, some wondered what the hell a 'moma' was when it was spelled right. Republicans and education, folks. They go together like whipped cream and onions, as this Bush war supporter proves:

In related news, the Republican Party announced that it now also hates other vaguely Osama-like names such as Yokohama, Omaha, and the Bahamas. Although a spokesperson admits they can't spell a single one of these despised names. (TMZ.com)

-Is it news if everyone saw it coming?-
Exactly one day after last making my roundup, Lindsey Lohan is in the news again for being goofy in public. Already on probation for a drunk driving offense involving a crash, Lohan was arrested again on suspicion of drunken driving and cocaine possession yesterday. She'd just been released from a 45 day stint in rehab. The story comes with celebrity mug shot fun:

Police responded to a call from the mother of Lohan's personal assistant, complaing she was being chased by an SUV. Police discovered the driver of truck was Lohan. "(Lohan) was trying to catch the mother of her personal assistant. Why she was trying to catch her, we don't know," a police spokesperson said. "The mother was afraid ... She wasn't quite sure what was going on, so she called the police because she wanted to make sure everything would be OK." Lohan failed a field sobriety test, blowing 0.12. Police also found a bag of cocaine in her pocket.

According to the report, "Lohan was booked on suspicion of drunken driving, possession of cocaine, bringing a controlled substance into custody and driving on a suspended license." In a statement her lawyer said Lohan suffered a relapse after leaving rehab -- adding that water's wet, wood burns, and the stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas. Kids these days and their crazy attorneys. (Reuters)

-And finishing a post with too many images is...-
...a website who's name can't go without comment. Youparklikeanasshole.com is a gallery of photos of cars that have been parked by assholes or by people who park like assholes.

Then there's the guy who got proactive about asshole parking:

Check them all out. (youparklikeanasshole.com, via reddit)

New York Rules That You Can't Find Religion Funny and be a Parent

A quick update on the story of Rachel Bevilacqua and her son Kohl has turned out to be a loss.

Bevilacqua lost custody of her son, in large part because of her involvement with the satirical Church of the Subgenius. Turns out that, in the state of New York, it's illegal to be a parent and think religion's ridiculous at the same time.

I really don't have a lot to add here; Rachel's left with over $70,000 in legal bills to pay for and I don't know whether or not an appeal is open to her. Read up on what I've written about her case here and here. If it pisses you off as much as it did me, click on the banner below to see how you can help.

Sorry it wasn't better news, but this is the 'Bringer of Bad Tidings,' after all...

Griper Blade: Filibustering the 2008 Elections

When Democrats were in the minority, Republicans complained about the filibuster. In 2005, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist wrote an op-ed complaining about dem filibusters of Bush's judicial nominees, which included this bit of fun:

... I have sought to address Democrats' grievances while holding true to the core principle of an up-or-down vote. So far, my Democrat colleagues have rejected all efforts at compromise, and continue to insist on a new, 60-vote standard.

Meanwhile, where are we today?

McClatchy Newspapers:

Seven months into the current two-year term, the Senate has held 42 "cloture" votes aimed at shutting off extended debate -- filibusters, or sometimes only the threat of one -- and moving to up-or-down votes on contested legislation. Under Senate rules that protect a minority's right to debate, these votes require a 60-vote supermajority in the 100-member Senate.

[...]

Nearly one in every six roll-call votes in the Senate this year has been a cloture vote. If this pace of blocking legislation continues, this 110th Congress will be on track to roughly triple the previous record number of cloture votes -- 58 each in the two Congresses from 1999-2002, according to the Senate Historical Office.

In other words, where Democrats fiilibustered Bush's favorite insane judicial nominees, Republicans are filibustering just about everything. The GOP use of the filibuster has been unprecedented in Senate history...
