The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 3/31/08

Joe Lieberman slaps his forehead
'You mean FDR actually won?'

-Headline of the day-
"Lieberman says Democratic Party Taken Over by the Left."

Yeah, Joe. That happened about 1933. I know he talks slow and all, but you'd expect him to have a better reaction time than this. (Politicususa)

-I stand corrected-
Earlier today, I referenced Slate's "Hillary Deathwatch" -- alternately called the "Rodhameter" -- which I said "promises to show Clinton's slow slide into primary defeat."

Did I say, "slow?" Sorry about that. I meant to say "fast as a drunk cheerleader on prom night." The first time I came across it on thursday, the Rodhameter gave her a 12% of winning. One day later, it had dropped to 10.3%. Now, after a rough weekend of her Bosnia comments hitting the weekend yack shows and Barack Obama scoring a 10-point lead nationally, the Deathwatch gives her an anemic 9.7% chance of winning the nomination. Ouch...

At this rate, with an average loss of roughly a half-point a day, Hillary's out in about nineteen or twenty days.

I guess I'm saying I doubt the accuracy of the Rodhameter... (Slate)

-Maybe the Rodhameter is right after all...-
Some people are calling the Clinton campaign "tenacious," some are calling it "dedicated." Vendors who serve political campaigns are calling it "deadbeat."

According to the report, "A pair of Ohio companies owed more than $25,000 by Clinton for staging events for her campaign are warning others in the tight-knit event production community -- and anyone else who will listen -- to get their cash upfront when doing business with her. Her campaign, say representatives of the two companies, has stopped returning phone calls and e-mails seeking payment of outstanding invoices. One even got no response from a certified letter."

In addition to stiffing the events companies, the report mentions a New Hampshire landlord, an Iowa office cleaner, and a New York caterer left in the lurch. In a supreme irony, Clinton -- whose signature issue is health care -- has outstanding bills for $292,000 in health insurance premiums for paid staff.

The spectre of doom for any political campaign is when they stop paying the staff. So far, Clinton's still cutting paychecks. But she's damned close. By the end of February of this year, Team Clinton was $8.7 million in the hole.

Says Clinton strategist Mark Penn to Hillary supporters, "For the love of God, people, buy a goddam bumpersticker or two!" (Politico)
