-Headline of the day-
"Rich begin feeling the pain in down economy."
How terrible! The pain felt by billionaires must be excruciating. According to the report, "They are investing more conservatively, spending less on luxury goods and are being more thrifty with their credit cards. Many are asking their personal shoppers and private-jet travel providers to seek the best deals rather than over-the-top extravagances."
Sounds awful. Can you imagine having to cut back on diamonds, Bentleys, and Faberge Eggs? "Three times this week I've been within arm's reach of a working class person," says T. Hieronymus Clenchbottom III, a sorghum magnate who's been forced to shop on his own occasionally to stretch his billions. "Needless to say, I was frightened witless." (AP)
-Republicans support the troops...-
...until they don't. Once soldiers and vets start demanding something other than phony emotional support, they can go fuck themselves.
At least, that seemed to be the case with House Republicans Friday, when a bill to fund veterans' and military organizations was used as a pawn for their offshore drilling scheme. Unable to get what they wanted through other means, GOPers amended the bill to include a drilling amendment. Yeah, it's got nothing to do with the military, but that's never stopped them before.
But that's not the bad part, the ridiculous part, the hypocritical part, the shameless part. No, it's impossible to overestimate just how lousy congressional Republicans can be.
See, when Rep. Chet Edwards read statements by vet groups urging a clean bill, the GOP booed them. Screw the military, GOPers have their idiotic bumper magnets and stupid little flag pins -- how much more "support" do these freeloading veterans want?
Geez, you'd think they'd actually done something for the country. Here House Republicans are, trying to get oil on the market in about a decade -- when demand for oil is guaranteed to be way lower than it is today -- and these heroes complain about it?
Ingrates. You'd think that these veterans and military personnel had fought as hard for oil as Republicans or something... (Think Progress, with video)
-Oops! McCain played it first-
Barack Obama: "What they're going to try to do is make you scared of me. You know, 'He's not patriotic enough, he's got a funny name.' You know, 'He doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills.'"
John McCain's campaign: "Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. It's divisive, negative, shameful and wrong."
