The Stuff I Didn't Get To -- 8/26/08

John McCain appears on Leno
Not a celebrity

-Headline of the day-
"McCain uses Vietnam ordeal against jibes over wealth."

John McCain has an answer for everything -- he was a POW. The frequent Jay Leno guest and non-celebrity was on the Tonight Show last night -- not as a celebrity, mind you -- when Jay asked him how many houses he had.

"I spent 5 1/2 years in a prison cell without -- I didn't have a house. I didn't have a kitchen table. I didn't have a table. I didn't have a chair," Baghdad Johnny answered. "I spent those 5 1/2 years... not because I wanted to get a house when I got out."

Notice something interesting there? He didn't answer the question. I don't think he's got them all counted up yet. It might actually be easier to figure out the answer to the question than to find ways to make clumsy segues to his POW experience. (Reuters)

-Standing up to the Homosexual Menace-
A brave family in Idaho is making a stand for American values and Republican Jesus against an evil corporation bent on destroying Christianity.

The news that greeting card publisher Hallmark has begun selling same-sex marriage cards has the right wetting themselves in panic and outrage. Jordan's Hallmark stores in the land of Larry Craig will not be carrying the cards. So, if you get gay-married in Idaho -- which you can't, but that's beside the point -- you're just going to have to take your America-hatin' business elsewhere, thank you very much.

Of course, Hallmark said that stores wouldn't have to carry the cards if they didn't want to, which makes this stand less "brave" and more "not a waste of shelf space." Still, if Idahoans don't stand up to a threat that doesn't actually exist, then... Umm...

Well, it'd be bad, believe you me! (Right Wing Watch)

-Not a hot button issue-
Some on the right still seem to believe that immigration is going to be a big issue in the '08 campaign. The problem is, it isn't. The Minuteman border nuts joined with Libertarian candidate Bob Barr, former GOP also-ran Tom Tancredo, and former GOP also-also-ran Alan Keyes for a big rally in Denver, timed to coincide with the DNC and embarrass Democrats about not putting the issue at the top of their priorities.

It really didn't go well. According to the report, "A rally by the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps featuring Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr drew just a few dozen people." All was not lost, however, as those few dozen supporters enjoyed "chewing turkey sandwiches and sitting in folding chairs at the almost-empty rally."

Hey, more for them. Isn't that what the anti-immigration movement is really all about anyway? (NY Daily News)
