Rick Warren, teller of a Purpose-Driven Lie

"Warren Says He Hardly Supported Prop. 8."

Last night, Rev. Rick Warren appeared on CNN's Larry King Live and proceeded to set his pants on fire. In speaking about California's Prop. 8, which took the right to marry away from same sex couples, Warren claimed he didn't have anything to do with it, had never taken a position on it, and had never heard of this "California" place.

"Larry, there was a story within a story that never got told. In the first place, I am not an anti-gay or anti-gay marriage activist," he told the host, who seems to be some sort of turtle/human hybrid. "I never have been, never will be. During the whole Proposition 8 thing, I never once went to a meeting, never once issued a statement, never -- never once even gave an endorsement in the two years Prop 8 was going."

What Turtleman probably suspected was that Rick was pulling a fast one. He'd heard of California, all right. Way back in October of last year, Warren said he was 100%, fullblown, crazy-balls-out-for Prop. 8. In fact, if it were possible, he'd have freakin' married Prop. 8, he loved it so much.

"For 5,000 years, EVERY culture and EVERY religion -- not just Christianity -- has defined marriage as a contract between men and women," Pastor Rick said in an email to church members. "There is no reason to change the universal, historical definition of marriage to appease 2% of our population... my longtime opposition is well known. This is not a political issue, it is a moral issue that God has spoken clearly about. There is no doubt where we should stand on this issue... This will be a close contest, maybe even decided by a few thousand votes. I urge you to VOTE YES on Proposition 8 -- to preserve the biblical definition of marriage. Don't forget to vote!"

Y'know, it looks to me like this is an endorsement, a statement, and a little bit of activism on behalf of Prop. 8. It kind of looks like Pastor Rick's a lying sack.

-Speaking of Christians...-
The victory for same sex marriage in Vermont has made the crazier types of Christian even crazier. Speaking for his Family Research Council, Tony Perkins once again warned of "wealthy homosexual activists and a liberal elite determined to destroy not only the institution of marriage, but democracy as well." Because if guys marry guys and girls marry girls, then democracy dies -- it's just plain logic.

Not to be outdone, the Liberty Council accused Vermont lawmakers of just being stupid and incompetent. "It is a sad day in America when elected officials are clueless about the definition of marriage," reads their statement. "If they cannot understand this basic human relationship between a man and a woman, then they are not competent to for public office."

Concerned Women for America said that Vermont legislators wanted to " to replace God" and warned that they'd be cast from the Garden of Eden -- which I guess is in the Vermont Statehouse. "That one decision by Adam and Eve to believe that they could 'be like God' separated them from God, destroyed the peace that they had experienced, and ushered in what some would call 'unintended consequences' of pain and destruction," they say.

But the craziest statement comes from the Alliance Defense Fund, who claim that the legislature can't do what it did and they're just fooling themselves into thinking that gay people can get married to each other. "Just because the legislature makes an enactment doesn't make it true," their lawyer says.
