News Roundup for 8/17/10

Poster: trust the lies, not the truth
GOP motto

-Headline of the day-
"The bare minimum for public discourse."

Steve Benen writes, "I noticed the cover story in the last issue of Newsweek had a five-word headline over a photo of 9/11 devastation: 'A Mosque at Ground Zero?' Of those five words, four are wrong -- it's not a mosque, and it's not 'at' Ground Zero." If you're like me, you're puzzling over which word was right. And Benen doesn't clear it up, so let that one keep you up tonight.

But that's not important right now. This is: "It's a reminder of one of the most painful aspects of our discourse: we're constantly having debates over issues that exist only in the imagination of deceptive conservative hacks, who happen to excel at propaganda. There are, for example, no 'death panels.' 'Terror babies' don't exist. There's no such thing as a 'death tax.'"

Need a controversy to drive a wedge into the American public? Then just make up some bullshit. We should stop talking about Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy and start calling them the "Tax Break for Rich Asswipes."... Wait, that's actually correct.

How about the "'We Fucked Up the Economy' Exemption?" No, that's pretty accurate too. The "Handout to the Jerks Who Screwed Us?"

Dang, this is harder than you'd think... (Steve Benen, with Olbermann video)

-Beck vs. Beck-
The Daily Show takes on the "Ground Zero mosque" freak out and discovers a bit of hypocrisy coming from Glenn Beck, among other things:

The Beck thing is pretty great (not the least for being basically the same thing the hated Jeremiah Wright also said), but my favorite part is still "Punch him Doocy-style!" I'm a sucker for physical comedy, I guess.

And Steve Doocy is a tool. (Comedy Central, via Think Progress)

-Bonus HotD-
"Andrew Breitbart to Speak at NY Anti-Mosque Rally."

Not surprising. But here's the fun part: he's heading off to the "WE HATE YOUR RELIGION!" shindig right after appearing at a Florida event sponsored by the First Amendment Foundation -- you know, that amendment about religious liberty and freedom of expression.

No foolin'. (Bartholomew's Notes on Religion)
