News Roundup for 12/27/10

Obama as Superman
America's greatest hero

-Headline of the Day-
"President Obama still America's 'most admired' man, poll finds."

Further proof that the midterm elections weren't about the president, as Gallup releases a poll showing that Barack Obama is the man most admired by Americans. 22% say they admire the president most, with George W. Bush (I know!) bringing up a distant second with 5%.

Not surprisingly, party is a factor here. According to the report, "Obama is the runaway favorite for Most Admired Man among Democrats nationwide: 46% choose him, followed by 7% who pick Bill Clinton and 5% Nelson Mandela. Obama also leads among independents, with 17%, but ranks second among Republicans behind George W. Bush."

So, once again, Republicans find themselves outside the mainstream. The president listed by historians as the worst president of our lifetime is their freakin' hero and the president they believe is the purest form of evil (with the exception of the 6% who admire Obama as well) is America's most admired man.

Republicans are strange, strange people. (Raw Story)

-Bonus HotD-
"In tough times, Haley Barbour flies high."

Politico reports that Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour uses a private jet on the public's dime. And not just on state business, but also for "fundraisers for himself and other Republican candidates and committees, to football games and to at least one boxing match." All to the tune of a cool half a million dollars.

A long shot to begin with, Haley Barbour's odds of becoming president just got worse. He's been getting a lot of bad press lately and it's all his own damned fault. (Politico)
