News Roundup for 1/7/11

Stacks of money
Unofficial symbol of the GOP

-Headline of the Day-
"Lawmakers Were at Illegal Fundraiser."

Wow, day one of the new House Republican majority just keeps getting worse and worse. Remember how Reps. Mike Fitzpatrick and Pete Sessions went and violated the Constitution by voting on stuff, despite not having been sworn in? On Ritual Reading of the Constitution Day, even. Embarrassing, to say the least.

But they may have bigger problems. Turns out the fundraiser they attended rather than dealing with trifling little details like taking their oaths of office was probably illegal. The fundraiser was held at the capital building itself. The Sunlight Foundation quotes the House Ethics Manual as reading, "House rooms and offices are not to be used for events that are campaign or political in nature, such as a meeting on campaign strategy, or a reception for campaign contributors."

The two say it wasn't a fundraiser now and anyone could attend, but according to SF, "The invite says that it is an invitation to 'Mike's Swearing In Celebration' and asks for at least $30 per person. The money appears to be for the bus trip to DC and entry to the celebration. The money, of course, goes to Rep. Fitzpatrick’s campaign account, is accompanied by a FEC disclaimer, and is solicited in whatever amount the donor chooses to give -- contributors could select amounts ranging from $30 to $120 or more."

Sounds suspiciously like a fundraiser to me. And, by "suspiciously like," I mean "the definition of."

Your new House majority, people. Just out of the gate and already running crooked. (Political Wire)

-American history comes alive-
A video recounting the relationship between Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. Pay attention and you just might learn something.

I have a new catchphrase: "I have a mental illness, but I don't... He was the father of the civil rights!" (Funny or Die)

-Bonus HotD-
"Rep. Steve King Boasts Of GOP Leaders' 'Mendacity'."

Holy crap, is this guy ever an idiot. (Talking Points Memo)
