Stories to Watch: 10/14/11

Got some stuff I need to do later and I'm running out of time right now, so tonight's going to be a shorty. Now here's the news...

Another day, another violent police action against the Occupy Wall Street protesters. Police and city governments should probably be aware that every incident like this is a PR coup for the movement. In other words, if you want them to go away, you're doing it wrong.

On the anti-Wall Street front; something's up. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner promises "dramatic enforcement actions" against financial criminals.

Josh Marshall detects a distinct shift away from deficits and toward jobs.

An appeals court blocks parts of Alabama's insane anti-immigration law.

Do regulations kill jobs? The answer is no.

Finally, the rapture preacher is back with a new date for the end of the world.

Stories to Watch: 6/17/11

I'm giving serious thought to taking next week off of blogging. Haven't decided yet, but it's been a while since I've had a vacation from it. Now here's the news...

Jimmy Carter calls for an end on the War on Drugs. Not the worst idea ever, considering that filling our prisons with nonviolent offenders is both mindbogglingly expensive and obviously not effective.

Bill O'Reilly scores one for conservative consistency; calls for David Vitter to resign in the aftermath of the Weiner resignation. Of course, it's never going to happen in a million years, but it's a nice gesture.

Polling shows a majority agree with the statement, "Government should do more to solve problems and help meet the needs of people."

US considers war crimes charges for Syria.

An Alabama Republican state senator and a horrible, horrible racist? Wow. I'm paralyzed with shock.

Russ Feingold's right; this does not seem like a step in the direction of overriding the Citizen's United ruling.

Finally, Andy Brietbart makes an ass of himself again. It's what being a media troll is all about.

Stories to Watch: 6/9/11

Yesterday, it was pushing 100 degrees. Today, I doubt if it cracked 60. This is totally normal, right? Now here's the news...

Response to the Gingrich campaign's crackup is positively Weinerian.

And Rep. Weiner says he has no plans to resign. I say leave it up to his constituents, who are mostly supportive.

The White House is considering a payroll tax break for employers as an economic stimulus. I wouldn't spend a lot of time waiting for supply-side measures to work.

Mittens stands by his weak acceptance of climate reality. Needless to say, this is the worst thing ever.

Meanwhile, Rick Santorum demonstrates the politically correct way to talk about global warming -- it's a big conspiracy by communists to put fluoride in our drinking water and rob us of our purity of essence. Or something like that. Honestly, all wingnut rants sound the same to me.

Sarah Palin's big new movie's coming out! Let's hope it does half as well as Atlas Shrugged. I can't wait for the reviews.

Alabama ramps up the anti-immigrant fervor to 11. Seriously, this is insane. It makes it a crime for a cab driver to pick up an illegal. No, really.

Herman Cain is just a jerk.

I'll be out most of the day tomorrow, so the blogs won't be updated. I'll probably manage to fire off a headline or two, though.
