O’Reilly distills conservative cluelessness about race down to one perfect moment of stupid

TPM - O'Reilly To Valerie Jarrett: Get 'Gangsta Rappers' To 'Knock It Off'
Talking Points Memo: Fox News host Bill O’Reilly on Thursday advised Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett to get “gangsta rappers” like Jay Z and Kanye West to say their behavior is wrong if the White House really wants to improve minority communities.

President Barack Obama had invited O’Reilly to the launch of his new initiative called “My Brother’s Keeper” earlier Thursday. The program aims to create opportunities and improve conditions for young minority men, but O’Reilly said he doesn’t believe the White House sees the “urgency” of the situation in the streets.

"You have to attack the fundamental disease if you want to cure it," O’Reilly told Jarrett. "Now I submit to you that you’re gonna have to get people like Jay Z, Kanye West, all these gangsta rappers to knock it off."

"They idolize these guys with the hats on backwards, and the terrible rap lyrics and the drug and all of that," he continued, adding that high-profile figures need to hammer young people with that message to "reverse the peer pressure."

O’Reilly also challenged First Lady Michelle Obama to come on “The Factor” and tell teenage girls “You stop having sex. You stop getting pregnant. This is wrong.”
In O’Reilly’s world the biggest stumbling block for African-Americans is other African-Americans, with whites mere observers to some sort of cultural self-destruction they have absolutely nothing at all to do with. It’s a view that seems to be shared by your average conservative — racism is over and any problems that black people may face are now the fault of black people. “I’m not racist,” a typical rightwinger might say, “but black people are all the same.”

Worse, minority attempts to improve situation are always attacked as “reverse racism” or some sort of plot to steal money and power from white people (see ACORN). Income inequality isn’t a thing. Institutional racism in the criminal justice system isn’t a thing. Ongoing discrimination in hiring and pay isn’t a thing.

But kids listening to “guys with the hats on backward” — now that’s a thing. And O’Reilly is so damned smugly proud of himself for spouting this marshmallow fluff inanity that he practically craps himself with joy.

"[I]t’s yet another demonstration of the rules both prominent and ordinary black people have to live with," writes Paul Waldman. “Unlike white Americans, they are subject to an entirely different and far more wide-ranging kind of responsibility. A black senator has to answer for the remarks of every black activist, black musicians are responsible for the actions of every wayward teenager, and black people everywhere carry with them a thousand sins committed by others. That burden isn’t just psychological; as we’ve seen in cases like those of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis, it can be deadly.”

It’s no wonder Bill O’Reilly has such a masterful grasp of the conservative mindset when it comes to race. Who better than a simpleminded clown to embody such a simpleminded understanding of America?

Bill-O’s latest racist rant

Raw Story:

Thursday on Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” host Bill O’Reilly and producer Jesse Watters engaged in a discussion of the changing demographics of the U.S. and noted, with puzzlement, that many Asian-Americans are voting Democratic. According to Media Matters, O’Reilly suggested that this is surprising because “Asian people are not liberal, you know, by nature.”

This discussion opened with the two men talking about the state of Hawaii, which they claim is rife with homeless people because of “addiction” and because, O’Reilly said, “they don’t enforce the drug laws.”

“But you know what’s shocking?” he continued, “35 percent of the Hawaiian population is Asian, and Asian people are not liberal, you know, by nature. They’re usually more industrious and hard-working.”

Yeah, it’s your drunken uncle’s race theorizing. If you brought up the fact that this is offensive, Bill would probably argue that his statements were positive, so he’s safe from the charge. But racist stereotypes are racist. And stereotypes always hurt someone. If you doubt that, ask the Korean-American kid how he feels when his teacher tells him that “people like you” should be better at math.

And how offensive is this to everyone who votes Democratic? Hey, you’re lazy and shiftless (wink, wink — you know what Bill means), not at all like those hard-working Asians.

Seriously, I often wonder if Bill O’Reilly feels out-of-place in the twenty-first century world. He becomes more anachronistic every day.

News Roundup for 5/22/12

Prospective buyer

-Headline of the Day-
"Presidential foundation threatens legal action over Reagan blood vial auction."

When you raise someone to sainthood, people are going to want relics. That's what conservatives are learning today as a go-getter capitalist says he'll sell a vial of Ronald Reagan's blood online.

Apparently, the blood was drawn after the attempted assassination of Reagan and somehow wound up in the hands of a private collector. Is it really Ron's? Who knows? That's the beauty of unregulated capitalism -- you never know when you're getting screwed.

"If indeed this story is true, it’s a craven act and we will use every legal means to stop its sale or purchase," said Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation executive director John Heubusch, who's clearly a commie who hates the free market.

"Any individual, including a president of the United States, should feel confident that once they enter into the care of a medical system their privacy and rights are held inviolable," he added -- assuming, of course, they don't enter that system as a lady looking for an abortion.

So far, the sale -- which is being held by an "auction house based on Guernsey, in the British Channel Islands" -- is going ahead as planned and things are looking bright for our entrepreneurial hero. According to the report, "As of late Tuesday, the highest bid for the vial was 7,587 pounds."

Seems cheap to me. With the right technology, you could clone the guy. Imagine what that would go for. (Agence France-Presse)

Stories to Watch: 4/20/12

Skipped the roundup because I had a project that took way longer than I expected. That's what happens when you screw it up the first time. Now here's the news...

What's worse than plagiarizing someone else's crazy-assed bullshit? As Southern Baptist big Richard Land found out, it's plagiarizing someone's else's crazy-assed racist bullshit. Bonus fun; Land leads the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission for the Southern Baptist Convention.

Team Romney seems extremely worried about the danger of faithless delegates.

Also in Romney news: his new national security adviser is a real dick.

George Zimmerman to be released on bail.

How insane is the right becoming? Fox News is too "liberal" for them.

Bill O'Reilly and Gretchen Carlson warn that watching Glee will totally turn kids gay.

Syria hasn't gotten any more peaceful.

Finally, RIP Facts.

News Roundup for 2/27/12

Rush Limbaugh
Despised even by Republicans

-Headline of the Day-
"Rush Limbaugh: America’s Least Favorite News Personality."

People like to point out that Rush Limbaugh is the top-rated talk radio host in America. He's on 18 kajillion stations, he beats everyone's ratings, he's a freakin' monster. Here's what they don't like to point out; no one listens to talk radio, so none of that means squat. Rush is probably beaten in every single market by 20 year-old Journey songs. He's not a ratings monster, he's a ratings nobody. That's why they only compare him to other talk radio hosts -- it makes him a big fish in an artificially small pond. Put him out there in the ocean with everyone else and he's a guppy.

So it really shouldn't surprise anyone to learn that America's favorite talk-radio host is America's most hated talk-radio host. According to the report, "A new Harris Poll out today finds that conservative shock jock Rush Limbaugh is America’s 'least favorite' news personality, with 46 percent of respondents picking him for the dubious honor. Runners-up Bill O’Reilly and Nancy Grace come in a distant second and third, at 31 percent and 23 percent, respectively." Oh yeah, Bill O'Reilly, too. Another big fish in a shot glass who regularly gets whomped by reruns of Seinfeld, but manages to brag about his ratings anyway. And Nancy Grace? Nice choice. I'm not a big fan of legal shows where everyone is always assumed to be guilty. She's a mean, hatchet-faced devilwoman.

Who are our favorite news personalities? It's those damned, hated lamestream media types; Diane Sawyer, Anderson Cooper, and Brian Williams. None of these people are on Fox -- how could they possibly be so beloved?

But according to Harris, only "one person is in the least liked top three for all three political parties" [Democrat, Republican, and Independent] -- Limbaugh. Even Republicans hate him. (ThinkProgress)

News Roundup for 1/24/12

Garden gnome giving the finger
Gingrich to debate moderators

-Headline of the Day-
"Gingrich won't 'allow' moderators to silence crowd at future debates."

Noodles isn't very good at bluffing. See, in case you haven't noticed, Gingrich's debate strategy has been to say something incredibly dickish to the moderators. This becomes a big applause line, because Republican audiences really like assholes. Then Newt basks in the love for him (which is really just hatred for the media) as waves of hoots and the sound of clapping hands washes over him.

That didn't work in the last debate in Florida, because NBC moderator Brian Williams decided that this debate would be less like a gladiatorial event and more like... well, a debate. You know, logical arguments, well thought-out points, appeals to reason rather than emotion. The whole shebang. Real furrowed-brow, cocked-eyebrow, Aristotle stuff. Newt's specialty is the red-faced, throbbing-forehead-vein, Bill O'Reilly stuff.

So you can see the fix he's in.

"We’re going to serve notice on future debates that we won’t tolerate -- we’re just not going to allow that to happen," Gingrich said of NBC's "be nice and polite" policy. "That’s wrong -- the media doesn’t control free speech. People ought to be able to applaud if they want to. It was almost silly."

Yes, Newt is "just not going to allow" any more moderators to drag the tenor of a GOP free media event all the way up to an actual debate, in much the same way that boxing coaches don't allow refs to stop fighters from hitting below the belt. (The Hill)

Stories to Watch: 11/13/11

Dealt with leaves again yesterday. There's this Norway maple in the back that holds onto it's leaves until the last minute, so when everyone else is done with their raking, I'm just getting started. It's about done now, but there's no guarantee they'll all fall before the snow comes. Now here's the news...

Images wider than my center column have always been a problem for me, so I've added another upgrade to the site. Opening the image in a new window has been the solution I've been going with, but I don't like switching between tabs to look at charts, graphs, illustrations, etc. that go along with posts. Maybe it's just me, but I find it breaks the chain of thought.

So now when you see a "click to enlarge" link, click it or the thumbnail to open the image. It'll open in the same window and shrink to fit to your screen, if necessary. To view the image at full resolution, click the diagonal arrow at the bottom center and drag the image with your mouse to scroll. Click the arrow again to return to resized. And click the close button at the top or hit escape to return to the page. In a gallery, hit the left and right arrow icons to navigate. Here, try it. Pick a thumbnail.

This should be universal, but on the off-chance it doesn't work with your browser, images should just open in the conventional manner.

Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul complain that last night's GOP debate was unfair -- and they're right. Team Bachmann got hold of a CBS News email saying that she would "not going to get many questions during the debate and she's nearly off the charts." Yes, it's true that Bachmann no longer stands a chance in hell of the nomination, but by using polling to decide how many questions she gets that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Here again, we see presidential debates as a way for the media to generate news stories -- and not as an informative part of the democratic process.

Bill O'Reilly's book on the Lincoln assassination is like everything else Bill does -- it's complete bullshit.

Occupy Portland defies a police order to clear out.

Herman Cain has conversations with God, who -- according to Cain -- told him to run for president. Oh, and Herman's just like Moses. That's what you want in a president; delusional megalomania.

Michele Bachmann thinks America should be more like a China that exists only in her imagination.

Finally, it's back. Republican candidates say we shouldn't torture people -- we should just do things that are torture and call it something else. Because that's what good people do.

Stories to Watch: 6/17/11

I'm giving serious thought to taking next week off of blogging. Haven't decided yet, but it's been a while since I've had a vacation from it. Now here's the news...

Jimmy Carter calls for an end on the War on Drugs. Not the worst idea ever, considering that filling our prisons with nonviolent offenders is both mindbogglingly expensive and obviously not effective.

Bill O'Reilly scores one for conservative consistency; calls for David Vitter to resign in the aftermath of the Weiner resignation. Of course, it's never going to happen in a million years, but it's a nice gesture.

Polling shows a majority agree with the statement, "Government should do more to solve problems and help meet the needs of people."

US considers war crimes charges for Syria.

An Alabama Republican state senator and a horrible, horrible racist? Wow. I'm paralyzed with shock.

Russ Feingold's right; this does not seem like a step in the direction of overriding the Citizen's United ruling.

Finally, Andy Brietbart makes an ass of himself again. It's what being a media troll is all about.

Stories to Watch: 5/8/11

Happy Mothers Day. Now here's the news...

The Washington Post tells their readers that there's simply nothing that can possibly be done about unemployment. So Dean Baker points out all the stupid in the WP's editorial, while Brad DeLong does the same. Also in economics news: worried about runaway inflation because the fed "keeps printing money?" Yeah, you can knock that off now.

Rightwing media are shocked to learn that the president shares information with generals (make sure to read the breathlessly panicked comments -- don't worry, the crazy isn't catching). Obama is "caught on video" handing a "secret note" to an Air Force General and... Well, that's it. The fact that he's out in the freakin' daylight, giving a memo to a general is... I don't even know what it's supposed to be. These guys know that the president is supposed to talk to generals, right? "Apparently this is what happens when the media can no longer accuse President Obama of having shady information on his birth certificate," writes Mediaite's Frances Martel.

This is fun; Taegan Goddard goes back to 2008 to find an example of Bill O'Reilly being vehemently wrong. "You're not gonna invade Pakistan, Senator [Obama], if you're president. You're not gonna send ground troops in there. You know it."

Osama bin Laden's death proves that evolution is a buncha hooey. Sometimes, I wonder if creationism isn't just an elaborate prank.

The courageous and oh-so-serious Paul Ryan plan to balance the budget turns out to have yet one more flaw -- there's no way it balances the budget.

Finally, whenever I start thinking I have the worst governor in America, I think about Florida's Rick Scott, who cut unemployment benefits to fund a tax giveaway to the wealthy.

News Roundup for 1/28/11

Bristol Palin, abstinence hero

-Headline of the day-
"Furor at Washington U. nixes Bristol Palin appearance."

Dancing with the Stars celebrity Bristol Palin was scheduled to speak at Washington University is St. Louis on the subject of abstinence, but things went awry as her appearance was "overshadowed by controversy," in the words of the school. It may surprise you to know that Palin became a teenage mother by not practicing abstinence.

So, it seems students weren't too happy that some of their tuition money was going to a talk on abstinence by someone who wasn't very good at abstinence. "It's not necessarily in opposition to the ideas that are being presented," said Philip Thomas, a Washington U. student launched an online petition against the gig. "People are getting so angry because of the opposition to Palin's lack of expertise and the high cost she is charging." The whole thing cost $20,000 -- while the school was making budget cuts.

Seems to me Bristol Palin is famous for something other than sucking at dancing and abstinence. I'm sure it'll come to me eventually. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

-Factor this-
Ok, so Rep. Steve Cohen compared Republican lies to Nazi lies and that was the worst thing ever! So Megyn Kelly then took offense to the idea, put forth by a guest on her show, that Fox News calls people Nazis like once every 4 and a half minutes. So then, Jon Stewart put together clip showing that, yes, Fox News calls people Nazis like once every 4 and a half minutes and Megyn could stop whining about it. So then Bill O'Reilly gets all butt-hurt and...

You know what? It's all this big, long, crazy thing. Just watch the clip:
