Misremembering Reagan

truth-has-a-liberal-bias:

Ronald Reagan and Corruption…the Truth Behind the Lies

~~~
The Republicans and the Corporate-Controlled-Media have spent the last 30 years trying to convince us that Ronald Reagan was wonderful. The reality is just the opposite…
Reagan ran the most corrupt administration of the 20th century.
By the end of his term, 138 Reagan administration officials had been convicted, had been indicted, or had been the subject of official investigations for official misconduct and/or criminal violations.
In terms of number of officials involved, the record of the Reagan administration was the worst ever.
{Click here to read about the convicted, the indicted, the bad, and the ugly.}
What I love about Reagan worshipers is how all-important optimism was — right up until a Democrat won the presidency with the slogan “Hope.”
Then, all of a sudden, optimism was some silly, pie-in-the-sky, froot-loopy thing that self-described “realists” pointed and laughed at.
Stories to Watch: 5/11/12
The Great Bush Recession caused "nearly two decades of Americans’ wealth" to vanish. Yeah Mittens, let's take the regulations off Wall Street and see what sort of damage they can really do.
The DOJ sues the state of Florida to stop Gov. Rick Scott's bloodless coup... I mean, "voter purge."
If the public sector employment crash weren't happening, "overall unemployment would be 7.0 to 7.3 percent instead of 8.2 percent." Huzzah for the fiscal sanity of Republican governors and the demonization of public sector employees. In the Republican War on Consumer Demand, Republicans are winning -- and consumer demand is losing.
Mitt Romney is just such a shameless liar.
Mike Huckabee seems to have a very poor understanding of how the Supreme Court is supposed to work.
Worse, former Ambassador to the UN John Bolton doesn't understand how diplomacy works.
Grover Norquist attacks Jeb Bush for remembering Ronald Reagan correctly.
Finally, a Republican television version of Pravda comes to Hawaii.
News Roundup for 5/22/12
Prospective buyer
-Headline of the Day-
"Presidential foundation threatens legal action over Reagan blood vial auction."
When you raise someone to sainthood, people are going to want relics. That's what conservatives are learning today as a go-getter capitalist says he'll sell a vial of Ronald Reagan's blood online.
Apparently, the blood was drawn after the attempted assassination of Reagan and somehow wound up in the hands of a private collector. Is it really Ron's? Who knows? That's the beauty of unregulated capitalism -- you never know when you're getting screwed.
"If indeed this story is true, it’s a craven act and we will use every legal means to stop its sale or purchase," said Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation executive director John Heubusch, who's clearly a commie who hates the free market.
"Any individual, including a president of the United States, should feel confident that once they enter into the care of a medical system their privacy and rights are held inviolable," he added -- assuming, of course, they don't enter that system as a lady looking for an abortion.
So far, the sale -- which is being held by an "auction house based on Guernsey, in the British Channel Islands" -- is going ahead as planned and things are looking bright for our entrepreneurial hero. According to the report, "As of late Tuesday, the highest bid for the vial was 7,587 pounds."
Seems cheap to me. With the right technology, you could clone the guy. Imagine what that would go for. (Agence France-Presse)
News Roundup for 10/13/11
'Bedtime for Bonzo' movie poster
History's greatest president (and two Hollywood actors)
-Headline of the Day-
"Rep. Bachmann Hits Cain On Taxes: 'I Want To Adopt The Reagan Tax Plan.'"
Shelly Bachmann must've heard that Herman Cain got his economic plan from a video game, because she's totally against it. She has a better plan, she says, from one of the "great economists that I admire, Ronald Reagan." Note to Shelly: Reagan was an actor in monkey movies, not an economist. But close enough, right?
Anyway, here's her plan; take the current tax rates and raise them (Reagan's rates were higher than they are today), then freak out over the huge deficits these tax rates create and raise them again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. Make sure that at least one of these tax hikes is called "the biggest tax increase ever enacted during peacetime."
Then enjoy a new golden age as your economy suffers through a recession and the president's approval rating hits 35%. To make it all extra-Reagany, throw in a massive market crash so severe that will forever be remembered as "Black Monday." Obviously, you're going to want to schedule that one for an actual Monday.
You know, looking at this, it seems like less of an economic plan and more of a way for a sad and forgotten former-frontrunner to drop Reagan's name at every opportunity. (Media Matters, with video)
-Cartoon time with Mark Fiore-
Hey kids, have you heard about the 99-percenters and this Occupy Everystreet business? Well, it turns out they've found a spokesperson!
-Bonus HotD-
"John McCain's ideas will save billions and billions of jobs."
That's literally what McCain argues, that eliminating regulations would increase employment, because they're currently "costing businesses billions and billions of jobs."
News Roundup for 8/4/11
Huckabee
History's greatest educator
-Headline of the Day-
"How Bush Killed Bin Laden: What’s Really In Huckabee’s 9/11 Cartoon."
Mike Huckabee is a man who thinks of the children. And so it only makes sense that he puts out cartoons that help the little tykes understand history. In one video, kids learn how Ronald Reagan saved America from black thugs in t-shirts that said "DISCO" on them and Franklin D. Roosevelt wasn't around to fight WWII. You know, real accurate stuff.
And so it is with 9/11 and terrorism. In case you've forgotten, the story goes like this: a bunch of Muslims attacked America, because they hate our freedom and because they were Muslims. Then George W. Bush yelled at them with a bullhorn and gave birth to the PATRIOT Act atop the pile of rubble. Liberals, of course, hated the whole idea because they like terrorists and don't like to make people mad, so they just wanted to forget 9/11 ever happened.
But not George W. Bush! He did a bunch of intelligence stuff and some stuff happened for a while that no one really needs to know all that much about and then, lo and behold, Osama bin Laden was dead! Yay for Bush!
Thank God we have Mike Huckabee to set the record straight. (Talking Points Memo)
-Cartoon time with Mark Fiore-
News Roundup for 4/25/11
Barack and Michelle with the Easter Bunny
Barack HUSSEIN Obama, shown hating Easter with a Muslim bunny
-Headline of the Day-
"Even for Fox, a Cheap Attack."
Fox News is breaking the super-important news that President Obama "failed to release a statement or a proclamation recognizing the national observance of Easter Sunday, Christianity's most sacred holiday."
Why? Probably because he's a secret Muslim terr'ist. Obama issued proclamations recognizing "Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, Hajj, and Eid-ul-Adha" -- all crazy Moozlim holidays -- but nothing for Easter. He also "failed to release a statement marking Good Friday," which is the worst thing ever.
"George W. Bush was in office for eight years," comments Steve Benen. "How many Easter proclamations did he issue? Zero."
Dear Sweet God... Dubya was a secret Muslim terr'ist too! In fact, it's worse than that. Charles Johnson looked back further and found that "Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush -— none of them issued official Easter proclamations."
Reagan? A terr'ist? By now, the US is obviously a secret caliphate!
America is clearly doomed. (Political Animal)
-And Mittens is the "serious" candidate-
The GOP presidential field is made up mostly of attention whores and teabagger frootloops. Which makes Mittens Romney kind of stand out. He's the "not crazy" one.
Well, that branding isn't going to work in today's Republican Party, so Romney decided to fix the perception that he's an elitist (i.e., someone who knows what the hell he's talking about).
In an op-ed for the New Hampshire Union Leader, Mittens wrote that President Obama is engaged in "one of the biggest peacetime spending binges in American history."
There ya go. He's no longer handicapped by the embarrassing appearance of competence. (Plum Line)
Our Lord and Savior
-Headline of the day-
"Former GOP Sen. Bennett: Reagan Held Views That Were 'Absolutely Anathema' To The Tea Party."
In an interview with Fox's Greta Von Sustersomething, former Utah Senator Bob Bennett came right out and called Ronald Reagan a terr'ist-sympathizing commie. America is ashamed of him, obviously.
"Ronald Reagan would probably not recognize the description of Ronald Reagan that is coming out of a lot of the tea party blogs," Bennett said -- then said that Reagan did stuff like compromise. If you're not outraged by that, then you don't know that "compromise" is code for APPEASEMENT!!
Remember how Reagan was reelected to 12 consecutive terms with 340% of the vote? Remember how he killed Mikhail Gorbachev with his bare hands, then came home to beat Tip O'Neil into submission with Gorbachev's skull? Remember how he brought down the Soviet Union by crashing a demolition derby car into the Berlin Wall, causing it to crumble?
Man, it's like all that stuff never even happened. (ThinkProgress, with video)
-"I LOVE ME!"-
It's starting to look a lot like a large chunk of Sarah Palin's dwindling popularity comes from some lady named "Sarah Palin." Turns out Sarah had a second Facebook account for "Lou Sarah" -- which is the most imaginative name ever -- and now it's looking like she's got a second twitter account.
What are these accounts for? Why, to praise Sarah Palin, of course. (Wonkette)
Stories to Watch: 2/6/11
I guess there's some big bowl game today, which doesn't have anything to do with bowling. Anyway, the Green Bay is in on it, so all the people around here are dusting off our cheese hats. Also, it's snowing again. If we get much more, we'll have to start tunneling through it. The Super Bowl seems to be sucking up all the news time, so this is going to be short. Now here's the news...
What's going on in Egypt? Well, a lot of stuff, but mostly nothing new. Al Jazeera reports that the nation "remains at an impasse."
ThinkProgress has a really good post up on how the Ronald Reagan that Republicans worship as a god never actually existed.
In related news, a lefty caller schools Rush Limbaugh on Reagan -- beautifully.
Finally, Juan Cole gets Socratic on Egypt, asking a boatload of questions that are instructive in themselves.
