Giving the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre all the respect he deserves

CNN: Responding to criticism from the National Rifle Association over Connecticut’s new gun laws, Gov. Dan Malloy argued the pro-gun group’s executive vice president, Wayne LaPierre, is simply blowing smoke.

“Wayne reminds me of the clowns at the circus - they get the most attention. That’s what he’s paid to do,” Malloy said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

The Democratic governor on Thursday signed into law some of the nation’s strictest gun regulations, following the state’s devastating school shooting in December in Newtown, which left 20 children and six adults dead.

The new Connecticut laws include the addition of more than 100 weapons to the state’s list of banned assault weapons - including the semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle, one of the firearms used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. The law also bans the sale of magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, as well as armor-piercing bullets. Buyers will need a certificate to buy ammunition.

It also requires background checks for all gun purchases.
See, this is the way you deal with political bullies — you smack them right straight in the nose in front of everyone, to demonstrate how powerless they really are. Wayne has no answer for this, the law’s getting passed despite his best efforts. It’s over in Connecticut and LaPierre’s just going to have to shut up and take it

Here’s hoping the weakling dems who roll over every time LaPierre casts a sideways glance get the message; the man is a clown. You’re letting yourself get pushed around by a freakin’ clown.

Stories to Watch: 4/25/12

Rained pretty much all day. I was going to replant some ferns, but that's out now. Maybe this weekend. Now here's the news...

President Obama sits down for a fairly long interview with Rolling Stone. One revelation: global warming will be an issue in the 2012 campaign.

Religious nutjob Bill Keller warns that voting for Romney will "Lead 1 Million Plus Souls to Hell." No word on how you're supposed to avoid this, since he doesn't like Obama either. I guess we're literally damned if we do and damned if we don't.

When did Republicans decide they needed to sabotage President Obama's first term? On inaugural night.

President Obama says he will veto CISPA.

Did you like George W. Bush's economic policies -- you know, the ones that left our economy a smoking ruin? Then you're going to love Mitt Romney's economic adviser.

Capital punishment is put down in Connecticut.

Mitt Romney has spent $18.50 for every vote.

The "ex-gay" movement takes a major blow.

Finally, Blue Dogs get what's coming to them.

News Roundup for 1/24/11

Lieberman"
After retiring, Joe Lieberman plans to celebrate his re-election

-Headline of the day-
"Lieberman to retire in 2012 but 'confident he would have won' a fifth term."

Joementum's quitting the whole governing business because he wants to retire to Sussex Downs to keep bees. Or something like that.

Whatever the reason, it's super-important that you know it isn't because he didn't stand a chance in hell of being re-elected. That's just a horrible lie made up by commies, terrorists, and the 66% of Connecticut voters who say they'd replace him.

Of course, you might be asking what difference it makes. If Lieberman's retiring, why would he even bother to speculate on an election that's never going to happen?

Ego, young grasshopper. Ego. (New Haven Register)

-Because that's just too short-
Rush Limbaugh pegged hypocrisy meters nationwide when he critiqued President Obama's State of the Union speech in advance:

"I know a lot of you don't want to watch this... I'm like you. Who wants to sit there and listen to somebody lie for an hour and fifteen minutes?" Rush asked.

I know what you're thinking and it's not fair. Rush's show is three full hours, so there's a difference. (Mediaite)

-HotD-
"78-year-old woman gets death threats after Beck shouts conspiracy."

But remember, it's completely irresponsible to say that rightwing hate talk inspires violence.(Raw Story)

Griper Blade: The Man Everyone Loves to Hate

OK, so now we've got an official Democratic nominee. As the roll call vote unfolded, the State of New York stopped the voting and Sen. Hillary Clinton moved that they forego the vote and nominate Barack Obama by acclamation. The motion carried and Barack Obama became the party's nominee.

Tonight, Barack Obama will speak to a crowd at Invesco stadium as the party's nominee. After this stupid-long campaign so far, it seems crazy to say it, but the general election is nearly underway. At least, in an official sense. Party nominations have become formalities in recent elections, tightly scripted and choreographed, without unpleasant surprises.

So, for all intents and purposes, we have a Democratic presidential candidate, a Democratic running mate, a Republican presidential candidate, and a big ol' honkin' question mark. Who is McCain's choice?

Signs point to Lieberman, but signs can be (deliberately) misleading...
